WerewolfRomance 现实主义-Realistic重生-Reborn

This afternoon, I received a text message from seven years in the future. The sender was listed as me—Julian. I assumed it was some sick new scam. Without even thinking, I muttered, "Nice try, psycho." Then a photo popped up on my screen. It was an empty bottle of sleeping pills. [I'm not a scammer, but I am dying. Break up with Vanessa today. Today is the first day she cheats on you.] [Her first love just got back in town. His name is Nathan Vance.] I froze. I was just about to scoff at the ridiculous lie—after all, I was Vanessa's first love. Then, the front door swung open. Vanessa walked in, a bright smile on her face, leading a man inside. "Julian, come meet someone," she said warmly. "This is Nathan. My adopted brother. He just moved back today." "The rooms at the family estate haven't been aired out yet, so Nathan will be staying with us for a while," Vanessa explained. "Oh, and please let the chef know to prepare a steak dinner tonight. Nathan just got back from overseas, and I'm worried his stomach won't handle anything too spicy..." Vanessa kept talking, but I couldn't hear a single word. My gaze was glued to the text on my phone screen, my mind spinning into numbness. "Julian?" Nathan's soft, tentative voice cut in. He looked at me with an anxious expression. "Are you okay? You look pale. Is my staying here an inconvenience? Honestly, I can just check into a hotel..." Vanessa immediately frowned, casting a displeased look my way. I snapped out of my daze, forcing a polite smile onto my face. "Of course not. If you're family to Vanessa, you're family to me. Make yourself at home." "I'll go talk to the chef about dinner." The moment I stepped out of earshot, my fingers flew across the keyboard. [Vanessa told me he's her adopted brother, not her first love! You're lying!] [Who the hell are you?!] Five minutes later, a notification buzzed on my screen. [I am you. Just seven years older.] [Tell the kitchen not to put any black pepper in his food. Nathan has a severe allergy. Tonight, you and Vanessa will get into a massive fight over it. It won't change anything, though. Even if there's no pepper, he'll find something else to frame you with.] I didn't know whether to believe this madness. Yet, after a long hesitation, I followed the instructions and strictly told the chef to omit all black pepper. At dinner, Vanessa guided Nathan to the table. Without missing a beat, Nathan pulled out the chair directly to Vanessa's right—my usual seat. My steps faltered. Nathan looked up at me, giving an innocent, wide-eyed smile. "Julian, is something wrong?" Vanessa glanced at me but said nothing. A sharp prick of discomfort hit my chest, but I swallowed it down and took a seat across from them instead. Nathan shot me a subtle, triumphant smirk. A few bites in, Nathan suddenly clutched his throat, retching violently. "Ugh—cough!" Vanessa sprang out of her seat in a panic. She wrapped her arms around him, frantically patting his back. "Nathan! What's wrong?!" "Black... black pepper," Nathan gasped out, his voice faint as he leaned weakly against her chest. "I'm allergic... can't breathe... Did Julian...?" Vanessa's expression morphed into pure rage. She whipped around and screamed at me: "Julian, are you out of your mind?!" "You know he's deathly allergic to black pepper! Did you do this on purpose just so he wouldn't stay here? How can you be so damn selfish?!" Her outburst left me completely stunned. My eyes stung with sudden tears. I couldn't comprehend why she would think of me as such a monster. "You never told me he had any allergies—" "Stop making excuses! Move, I'm taking him to the ER!" Before she could rush him out, our private chef dashed out of the kitchen, holding up a small trash bin and a tablet. "Ms. Sterling, please wait! There's a misunderstanding!" "Mr. Cole specifically ordered us not to use a single grain of black pepper! Look, we tossed out every pepper grinder and thoroughly sanitized the cookware before cooking." Terrified of being blamed, the chef held out the kitchen security footage. "We were exceptionally careful, I swear!" Vanessa paused, glancing down at the screen. The footage clearly showed my conversation with the chef, the discarded spices, and the clean preparation. Meanwhile, in her arms, Nathan had magically stopped choking the moment the chef appeared. The flush on his face was already returning to normal. I stared straight at him. "Feeling better already, Nathan?" Realizing his cover was blown, Nathan awkwardly cleared his throat, unable to keep up the act. "I'm sorry... I guess I was just so anxious that my throat seized up. Like a panic attack." "Vanessa, please don't be mad at Julian." Vanessa tore her eyes away from the footage, looking at me with a fleeting flicker of guilt. "Julian, I..." I knew what she wanted to say. It didn't matter anymore. Every shred of doubt vanished—the person on the other end of that phone was truly me from seven years in the future. "Enjoy your dinner," I said quietly. "I've lost my appetite. I'm going up to sleep."[Am I... not happy, seven years from now?] After hitting send, the chat remained dead silent for a long time. Then, my phone rang. It was an incoming call from my own number. I swiped to answer. The voice flowing through the speaker was undoubtedly mine, but it sounded hollow, weathered, and drenched in soul-crushing despair. "Seven years from now, you and Vanessa are married. The wedding was massive, straight out of a fairy tale." "You even have a little girl named Lily." Before a single spark of joy could ignite in my chest, his next words shattered me. "But you aren't happy. You live in pure agony." "Nathan never left your house. He crossed every line with Vanessa, and every single time, she excused it under the guise of family." "Until one day, you came home early from a business trip and caught them together. In your own bed." The voice broke, swallowed by a muffled, agonizing sob. Hearing it felt like a serrated blade carving into my heart. "Vanessa cried on her knees, swearing she would change. And you believed her. For the sake of the baby in her belly, you couldn't bring yourself to walk away." "When the baby was barely seven months old, she started sleeping with him again. Slowly, she stopped feeling guilty altogether. She called you boring. She said your paranoia made you look like a lunatic." "And eventually... even your own daughter started calling Nathan 'Daddy.'" A photo pinged into our chat. It was a family portrait. Vanessa had her arm looped around Nathan's, and a sweet little girl around four or five sat on their laps, beaming at the camera. I wasn't in the picture. There was no room for me at all. Listening to my own shattered voice, I felt the suffocating weight of his torment crashing over me. Then, my mind flashed back to the very first picture he had sent—the empty bottle of pills. My voice trembled violently. "The pills... you took an overdose! What do I do? How do I save you? How do I save myself?!" "Julian... are you dying right now?!" A long, weary sigh drifted through the line, growing softer by the second. "Probably. The pills are kicking in. Vanessa took Nathan and Lily on a weekend getaway. The housekeeper will probably find my body tomorrow." "Break up with her, Julian." "Walk away, and never look back!" A loud crash echoed through the speaker as the phone slipped and shattered against the floor. Then, the line went dead. I collapsed to my knees, sobbing uncontrollably. It felt as if I were already in that cold, desolate room seven years from now, watching my own life bleed out into the dark. I don't know how long I cried, but by the time I ran out of tears, the bedroom door gently clicked open. Vanessa walked in, wrapping her arms around me as she noticed my swollen, bloodshot eyes. "Julian, about earlier... I'm so sorry. I—" I looked up through my tears and stared into her eyes. "Vanessa, let's break up."Vanessa froze. Assuming I was just throwing a tantrum, she leaned down, trying to kiss away my tears to soothe me. "Julian, I know I messed up. Nathan has always been frail, and I let my protective instincts get the better of me. He feels awful about it too. He wants to apologize to you." "Can we just put this behind us, please?" I pulled back, turning my face away from her kiss, and firmly pushed her arms off me. "I know Nathan was your first love." Vanessa's face instantly hardened. She seized my wrist in a vice-like grip. "How do you know that?" "Julian, have you been snooping into my past?!" Her grip bruised my skin. I looked at her, fresh tears burning behind my eyelids. "Does it matter how I found out?" "You moved your ex into our home behind my back. You yelled at me and blamed me the second he acted up. Don't you owe me an explanation?!" Vanessa fell silent, her jaw tight, before she forced out a defensive reply. "We ended years ago." "He's family to me now. Nothing more." The word "family" felt like a poisoned needle stabbing into my brain. In an instant, the ghostly voice from seven years in the future echoed in my head—the screaming, the cheating, my own child calling another man Daddy... Enough. God, enough! I ripped my wrist from her grasp and walked toward the door. "Whether he's just family, you know best in your heart." "We're done, Vanessa." The moment I yanked the door open, I found Nathan standing right outside, eavesdropping. Tears welled in his eyes. The second he saw me, he dropped to his knees and grabbed onto my pant leg. "Julian, please don't leave!" he cried theatrically. "Vanessa and I were young and stupid back then, but that's in the past! It's all my fault. Don't ruin your relationship over me. If you hate having me around, I'll pack my bags and leave right now!" "I'm just a burden anyway. Maybe I'd be better off dead!" Seeing Nathan on the floor, Vanessa forgot all about me. She rushed forward, hauling Nathan to his feet before turning on me with fury. "Julian, what is wrong with you?!" "He's literally on his knees begging you! Are you really that heartless?!" A wave of dizziness hit me. It was like I was already seeing the nightmare unfold. The memory of catching them in bed, and Vanessa glaring at me with that exact same venomous gaze, demanding to know why I couldn't just forgive her. I didn't say another word. I shoved past Nathan and walked out of the house. Vanessa tried to follow, but Nathan let out a cry of pain, collapsing against her. She immediately abandoned the chase, pulling him into her arms to baby him. I walked out of the gates and stood by the curb, hailing a cab in the biting night air. The cold wind cut through my shirt, but it cleared my head completely. A yellow cab pulled up, and just as I opened the door, a hand grabbed my arm, yanking me backward. Vanessa stood there, furious. "Julian, get back inside right now!" "Nathan is having a complete breakdown because of you! You're going to come inside and apologize to him properly!" "Let go of me!" I snapped, trying to shake off her grip. Then Nathan came running out too. He grabbed my sleeve, dropping to his knees on the asphalt again, sobbing dramatically. Seeing the chaotic domestic scene, the cab driver shook his head and sped off into the night. In the struggle, Nathan kept dragging me backward, inching us closer to the middle of the road. Suddenly, blinding high beams cut through the darkness. The blaring horn of an oncoming semi-truck shattered the night air. Nathan, who had been kneeling, abruptly sprang to his feet and lunged toward me! The deafening screech of heavy brakes tore through my ears. Everything seemed to move in slow motion. I saw Vanessa's terrified face as she reached out to pull me away. At that exact moment, Nathan lost his footing and fell backward. Vanessa's outstretched hand shifted mid-air. She grabbed Nathan instead. She pulled him tightly into her chest, yanking him out of harm's way. The truck slammed into me. My body was thrown into the air like a ragdoll. Seconds later, I hit the asphalt with a sickening crunch. Excruciating, bone-shattering pain exploded through every nerve, followed by the warm, thick spread of blood pooling beneath my head. Right before the world went black, a cold, mechanical whisper echoed in my fading consciousness: [The timeline has been altered.]Seven years later. Vanessa stared at her phone, her thumb hovering over the dozen unanswered calls she had placed to me. A gnawing sense of dread tightened around her throat. I had never acted like this before. Usually, when she crossed a line, I would spiral. I would blow up her phone with texts and calls, crying, demanding to know why she was torturing me, asking why she kept cheating, begging her to come home. Yet today was completely silent. Not a single missed call. Not a single message all day. Vanessa couldn't sit still anymore. She grabbed her coat, bypassing Nathan, who was lounging on the sofa watching cartoons with Lily. "I'm heading back home for a bit," she said curtly. "Take care of Lily." Nathan immediately jumped to his feet, blocking the front door. "What's wrong? Is Julian throwing another fit?" "Vanessa, we finally got away for a weekend vacation. Just ignore him. He pulls this dramatic routine every time. If you cave now, he'll only act worse next time." Vanessa hesitated, but the bad feeling in her gut urged her to leave. Seeing her waver, Nathan sighed softly and played his trump card. "You promised Lily you'd take her to the amusement park tomorrow." "You wouldn't break a promise to your own daughter, would you?" Nathan cast a subtle glance toward the couch. Lily immediately scrambled down, throwing her arms around Vanessa's legs and wailing, "Mommy, don't go! Don't go back to the bad man!" "The bad man is mean! He's trying to ruin my trip to the park! Stay with Daddy and me, Mommy! You promised!" A sharp pang of guilt stabbed Vanessa's heart. She knelt down, stroking Lily's hair, her voice firm. "How many times have I told you, Lily?" "He's not a bad man. He is your father. Don't call him that." Lily sniffled, looking up with tear-filled eyes. "I'm sorry... If Mommy stays, Lily will be good. I'll call him Daddy when we get home, I promise." Vanessa sighed and nodded. She stayed. Yet all throughout the night, she picked up her phone, watching the dark screen light up and fade, over and over again. Still, nothing from me. Her calls went straight to voicemail. By four in the morning, the suffocating anxiety swallowed her whole. She booked the earliest flight back to the city. Nathan woke up, rubbing his eyes as she packed her purse. "Vanessa? It's so early. The park doesn't even open until nine." Vanessa didn't look back. "Julian hasn't answered me in twenty-four hours. Something is wrong. I'm going home." "Take Lily to the park." Before Nathan could protest, the door clicked shut behind her. When her plane touched down, the dread in her chest had morphed into outright panic. She urged the cab driver to step on the gas, running through yellow lights until the car screeched to a halt outside the estate. An ambulance was parked in the driveway, its red lights flashing silently against the morning mist. Without waiting for the car to fully stop, Vanessa shoved the door open, stumbling up the stone steps and bursting through the front doors. "Julian!" she screamed, her voice cracking with terror. "Julian! What happened?! Answer me!" No one answered. The household staff stood huddled together near the master bedroom, their faces pale as ghosts. Vanessa shoved past them like a madwoman, rushing into the room. In the center of the floor lay a stretcher, draped in a stark white sheet. A paramedic stepped forward, looking at Vanessa with solemn eyes. "Ms. Sterling... I'm so sorry for your loss." "Mr. Cole suffered a fatal overdose last night. He... didn't make it."
