Childish Friend Cried Abuse, But Panicked When I Reported It
My best friend, the one with the baby-girl act, came running to me with her face covered in blood, crying and begging for help. "Carolyn, baby's so hurt, baby wants a divorce. I should have listened to you back then and never married that monster." When I learned she'd been locked up for half a month and beaten every single day, my heart ached for her, so I put in all the time and effort to gather every piece of evidence for her. But the moment we stood in court and my best friend heard her husband say he'd been wrong, she went soft all over again.

My best friend, who has a baby-talk illness, came running to me, her face covered in blood, crying and begging for my help.
"Carolyn, Baby's so upset. Baby wants a divorce. I should have listened to you back then and never married that jerk."
When I learned she'd been locked up for half a month and beaten every single day, my heart ached for her, and I went to great lengths to gather all the evidence for her.
But the moment we got to court, the second my best friend heard her husband admit he was wrong, she melted right away.
"Darling husband, honestly, Baby never really wanted to divorce you. Baby can't live without you, Baby wants to be with you forever and ever~"
"This is all Carolyn Swanson's fault! She tricked Baby! She even faked evidence to force Baby into giving false testimony and divorcing you!"
Because of what she said, I got cyberbullied online, and my law license was revoked.
Afterward, she bragged to me with a smug look on her face.
"Thanks to you, my darling husband loves Baby even more now~ He finally agreed to take Baby to ride the carousel~"
So it turned out she wanted a divorce not because she was being beaten, but simply because her husband wouldn't take her on the carousel.
My eyes went red with rage, and I dragged her down to die with me.
When I opened my eyes again, my best friend was there, face covered in blood, crying and begging for help. I turned and called 911 for her.

Nellie Fletcher burst into my office covered in blood.
"Carolyn, best friend of mine, you have to help Baby with this! Baby can't go on like this anymore!"
"Jason Chavez locked Baby up and beat Baby just because Baby put too much salt in the food! Baby finally managed to escape, and now Baby wants a divorce!"
I snapped out of it and looked up at her.
She clumsily wiped the tears off her face and choked out:
"Baby was wrong about everything before. You told Baby not to marry that jerk, and Baby ended up cutting you off completely for his sake, Carolyn."
"After all this, Baby finally sees that you're the one who's best to Baby, the one who really has Baby's interests at heart. Baby's come to her senses now, Carolyn, Baby wants a divorce!"
The people outside were all peering curiously into the office.
Faced with how pitiful Nellie looked, I felt nothing.
All I knew was that I couldn't wade into this mess of hers again.
In my last life, my heart went out to her, knowing she was naive and had no idea how cruel the world could be.
Afraid she'd get hurt again, I let her move into my home and looked after her with the best of everything.
When I found out that Jason Chavez hadn't just locked her up and beaten her for half a month, but was also using her money to keep other women,
I went to great lengths to help her gather evidence, hoping to help her win the divorce and get most of the assets, and to see Jason Chavez punished.
Who'd have guessed that on the day of the hearing, the moment Jason Chavez tossed out a careless apology, she flipped on the spot.
In court she cried her eyes out and dumped every bit of the blame on my head.
I became the one who'd wrecked their relationship, the one who'd faked evidence to force her divorce.
Jason Chavez made a scene demanding I pay him for emotional distress.
The whole thing quickly spread online, I got cyberbullied, and my law license was gone.
Nellie watched me fall apart and smiled, thoroughly pleased with herself.
"Carolyn really is Baby's best friend! Thanks to you, darling husband loves Baby even more now~"
"Darling husband finally agreed to take Baby to ride the carousel. It's all his fault, really. If he'd just agreed sooner, Baby wouldn't have had to pour so much effort into getting his attention."
Only then did I realize it was all true, she really had been locked up, beaten every day, forced to hand over her salary every month.
But the reason she'd asked for a divorce was simply because Jason Chavez refused to go ride the carousel with her.
Nellie gave two little giggles.
"From now on, whenever Baby fights with darling husband, Baby will come to you. It'll bring Baby and darling husband closer and earn Baby a little something on the side too~"
In a fit of fury, I dragged her down to die with me.
This time, I calmly picked up my phone and dialed 911.
"I can't get involved in your family business. The only thing I can do is call the police for you."

A flicker of panic crossed her eyes.
She quickly reached out and clamped down on my wrist.
"No! Baby doesn't want to blow this up into a big deal!"
"If that jerk finds out Baby called the cops, he'll definitely beat me half to death when Baby gets back!"
"Baby just wants Carolyn to help me get a divorce. I don't want to make a big thing of it. Baby's best friend in the whole world will help her, right?"
She wasn't afraid her husband would beat her to death.
She just wanted to use the divorce to provoke her husband.
That way she could get an apology out of Jason, and the two of them could reconcile.
And me, the so-called best friend she kept talking about?
I was just a bit of seasoning to spice up their relationship.
I didn't want to be that sucker anymore. Let them both have a miserable time of it for the rest of their lives.
I pretended to feel terribly sorry for Nellie.
"He did this to you, and you don't want him punished?"
"Nellie, don't tell me you still can't bear to let him go?"
I paused for a few seconds, then set down my phone.
"If that's how it is, there's nothing I can do for you."
"I've got things to take care of here. If there's nothing else, please leave."
Nellie got so worked up she shed a few more tears.
"Carolyn, you can help Baby get a divorce! You can help Baby, you can even take Baby home and look after her!"
"Jason kicked Baby out, and now she's covered in bruises and doesn't have a cent, with nowhere to go! Only you can help her!"
"You were always willing to help Baby before, so why are you refusing Baby this time?"
Before?
By all rights, I hadn't been in contact with her for years now.
She couldn't be talking about our past life, could she?
Was it possible she'd been reborn too?
Was she trying to make me the seasoning in their relationship all over again?
I didn't want to get tangled up with her again.
"Nellie, ever since you cut me off for your husband's sake, we haven't spoken in three years."
"Things are fine the way they are now. I do my lawyer work, you enjoy your happy married life, and we leave each other alone."
"No, no, no!" Nellie scrambled to explain. "Baby was wrong, Baby was in the wrong before!"
"Carolyn, just take Baby back with you. Baby will behave and won't cause any trouble. Once you help Baby get the divorce, Baby will leave."
Wanting to come freeload off me again?
I called out toward the door.
"Tania, call 911 for me. Tell them someone's been assaulted and had their money stolen and needs help."
Nellie tried to stop me, but the call had already gone through.
She turned her head and glared at me with a look full of resentment.
"Carolyn! How could you do this!"
"I already told you Baby doesn't need the police! Baby just wants a divorce!"
"Aren't you a lawyer? Getting Baby a divorce can't be hard for you! Why won't you help Baby?"

When I didn't respond, she just smashed up my office.
Smashing away, she loudly griped about me the whole time.
"As my besties bestie, you actually dare not help me get a divorce?"
"You're a useless lawyer anyway! Today baby's doing the world a favor and trashing this dump of yours!"
On the surface, I looked startled by what she was doing.
Inside, though, I was already calculating how much the stuff she'd broken was worth.
Smash it, smash it!
If she broke it all, I could replace it all with new ones.
By the time the police arrived on the scene,
Nellie instantly switched back to her pitiful little face and threw her arms around one officer's leg.
"Officer sir~ baby's so wronged~"
She raised a hand and pointed at me. "That mean woman bullied baby~"
"Baby just wanted to ask her to help baby divorce baby's horrible husband! And she cursed at baby! She even hit baby!"
"Officer sirs, arrest her right now! She hurt baby this badly—arresting her would be doing the public a favor!"
These officers didn't look much older than her, and she still had the nerve to call them "uncle."
I'd thought she was just a bit childish and naive, but it turned out she really did treat herself like a kid.
The officer patiently asked her for the details.
She just kept complaining about me.
"Sir~ you have to help baby! She cursed at baby and bullied baby~ boo hoo hoo~"
"Baby's never been wronged like this before! She's a bad person! Arrest her!"
Black ellipses popped up on the officer's forehead.
I pulled up the surveillance footage from earlier.
"She ran in covered in blood, saying she'd been beaten and locked up. I don't know the details."
With the evidence airtight, Nellie was to be taken back to the police station so they could look into what actually happened.
Nellie lied and claimed the matter had to do with me, so I got taken along too.
At the station, I roughly explained my relationship with Nellie and what had happened.
Nellie just kept trying to pin everything on me.
When the police saw there was no reasoning with her, they called her husband, Jason Chavez.
Nellie failed to stop them, so she threw another fit right there in the station.
"You're all bad people! Why did you make baby's dear husband come here? You're in cahoots with that awful Carolyn Swanson!"
"If dear husband finds out about this, baby's going to get beaten again for being naughty when I go home! Baby doesn't want to be beaten! You bunch of jerks!"
The officers tried to soothe her, telling her they'd protect her and wouldn't let her get beaten.
She didn't tone it down—she only kicked up an even bigger fuss.
"You don't understand! Dear husband hitting me means he loves me! Baby ran away because I'm giving dear husband the silent treatment! Baby doesn't want to see him right now!"
"He hasn't apologized to baby yet! Baby hasn't forgiven him. Baby wanted a divorce to make him realize his mistake!"
"And then that awful Carolyn Swanson had to go and ruin baby's plan! Baby's fine, baby can just go home on my own!"

The police didn't let her go, either—they told her to sit tight and wait for Jason to show up.
One of the female officers leaned in and whispered in my ear.
"This friend of yours... does she have some kind of thing for this? Beaten black and blue by her own husband, and still lovesick over him."
"Maybe you should talk some sense into her more often. If it's really like this, she needs to get away from bad people sooner rather than later."
I almost laughed out loud.
Even a stranger could see how badly Nellie was blinded by love.
Just then, Jason came storming into the police station.
"Hey! Nellie! You call the cops on me because you don't want to be with me anymore?"
Nellie rushed over to him, all worked up.
"No, no, sweetie hubby~ Baby doesn't want to divorce you~"
"Baby was just upset that you won't take Baby out to the amusement park to ride the carousel~"
The two of them launched right into their loving-couple act in front of everyone.
Jason gave a soft snort.
Nellie clung to his arm and cooed.
"Sweetie hubby~ don't be mad~"
"It's really not Baby's fault! It's all Baby's bad friend! She tricked Baby into divorcing you!"
As she said it, she raised her hand and pointed at me.
"She said the divorce would get Baby most of the assets, and then once Baby got them she'd split them fifty-fifty with Baby!"
"She's a bad person! She tried to fool Baby, but Baby didn't believe her nonsense. Baby loves her sweetie hubby~"
Jason turned his rage on me.
"Hey! I know you—you're Carolyn Swanson, right? The one who knelt at someone's feet like a lapdog for ten years and got played for a fool!"
"When my wife and I got married, you had a thing for my good looks, so you meddled to try to split us up and take her place!"
"I didn't want you back then, and now you want to talk us into divorcing so you can get your revenge on me! You vicious woman, you're pure poison!"
"Nobody wants you, you can't get a husband, so you go around wrecking other people's relationships! No wonder nobody looks twice at trash like you! Even if I got you for free, I wouldn't take you!"
Not one word of what he said was true.
The reason I'd advised Nellie against marrying him was that he was short-tempered, stingy, and disrespectful to Nellie and her family.
I never imagined Nellie would be so afraid I still had my eye on her husband that she'd tell him this many lies in front of him.
But I'd guessed long ago that Nellie would try to pin it on me, and I'd prepared my counterattack in advance.
I gave Nellie a faint smile.
"Nellie, since you can't bear to lose your husband, then I won't keep it a secret for you anymore."
I turned and looked calmly at Jason.
"Jason, Nellie already knows your secrets. She came to me meaning to ruin your reputation and then divorce you."
"This is the evidence she hired me to dig up—not just proof of your affair, but proof that you, as the finance director, quietly embezzled company funds."
"Now that she doesn't want a divorce, I'll reluctantly hand the evidence over for the two of you to deal with yourselves."
I took out a stack of documents and tossed them down in front of them.
"From now on the two of you should stay together and stop being so fickle. The way I see it, Nellie really does love you and can't bear to lose you."
Nellie went pale with shock. "Who told you to go investigating Baby's sweetie hubby?"
