He Gave Me His Salary, Then Blamed Me
After we got married, my husband, Mason Callahan, handed over his debit card and told me to treat myself, no limits. Then his mom ended up in the hospital. The second he asked me to transfer the money for her treatment, I told him that there was none left. He flew into a rage. "I give you ten grand a month! How the hell can you have zero dollars left? "I said you could treat yourself, but you actually blew through every cent? You didn't save a dime? God, how did I end up marrying such a wasteful woman?" I didn't bother arguing. I simply asked for a divorce.

Chapter 1
The pungent smell of bleach stung my nostrils, making my nose burn.
In the hospital’s private suite, my mother-in-law lay curled under the sheets, letting out weak, shuddering groans like she was about to take her final breath.
My husband of five years, Mason Callahan, stood beside her with bloodshot eyes and a panicked, pale face.
"The doctor said she needs surgery," he choked out, his voice raw as he whipped his head toward me. "It's going to cost fifty thousand dollars. Sophie, get the money."
I stared down at the faded, worn hem of my clothes, keeping my voice soft. "The account is empty."
The air instantly turned to ice.
His mother’s whining cut off mid-groan. The room fell completely, terrifyingly silent.
My sister-in-law, Phoebe Callahan, bolted across the tile floor and grabbed my arm, her eyes brimming with tears.
"Sophie, please tell me you're joking," she sobbed, looking like she was on the verge of a full breakdown, "Mason’s heart can't take this kind of stress. You can't say stuff like that!
"He’s been giving you his entire ten-thousand-dollar paycheck every month for five straight years! How could there be nothing left? Mom needs that money to save her life!"
Instead of de-escalating the situation, Phoebe’s emotional plea shattered Mason's panic, replacing it with pure, deadly suspicion. He glared at me, assessing every twitch of my face.
"Sophie, are you telling me there isn't a single dollar in that account?"
I met his gaze, feeling completely detached from the drama as if I were listening to a story about a total stranger. "That's right. It's gone."
"Where did my money go?" Fire practically flared in his eyes as he took a heavy step toward me, breathing like an enraged bull. "Ten grand a month! For five years! You're telling me it's all gone? What did you spend it on?"
Right on cue, Hannah Brooks stepped forward. She gently rested a fragile hand on Mason’s arm, playing her favorite role as the sweet peacemaker.
"Mason, please don't yell at Sophie," she coaxed, casting a soft, pitying look in my direction, "She must’ve a good reason for this. You're going to scare her."
She turned her wide, sorrowful eyes to me. "Sophie, if you're in some kind of trouble, just tell us. We can figure it out together. Mason is just terrified about his mom, so please don't take his harsh words to heart."
Hannah’s pathetic little speech sounded thoughtful on the surface, but every single word was pure gasoline on the fire. Look at her: so kind, so understanding, making me look like a cold, heartless monster in comparison.
Predictably, Mason snapped.
"Figure it out together?" He shoved Hannah's hand off his arm and lunged toward me, gripping my wrist so tight I felt the bones grind. "I gave her my entire paycheck every single month! Now my mom is lying in a hospital bed, and she tells me to figure it out?"
His face contorted as he directed his rage right in my face. "When I told you to treat yourself, I was just being polite! That's just something a husband says! Did you seriously take it literally and spend every last dime?"
Veins throbbed in Mason’s neck as his voice echoed off the walls. "My mom needs this money to survive! If you had saved even a fraction of it, we wouldn't be in this disaster! Marrying a wasteful woman like you is the the worst luck I've ever had!"
Phoebe hovered near his shoulder, tugging his shirt while winking frantically at me. "Sophie, just apologize to him! Apologize and we'll figure out the money later. Let's just get through this first!"
I looked at the three of them—the furious husband, the enabler sister, and the innocent childhood sweetheart playing her sweet little act.
What a pathetic show.
I thought back to the past five years. I gave up my career as a senior partner at an accounting firm just to manage our household. I pulled every string, called in every favor, and used every connection I had to drag Mason from an ordinary employee all the way up to a corporate director.
While he casually enjoyed the fruits of my labor, he was busy taking his precious little childhood sweetheart to high-end restaurants and buying her designer bags using the very money I went out of my way to save.
Chapter 2
Now that Mason burned through all his money, he blamed it on me.
How hilarious.
Seeing my silence, Mason assumed I was guilty. He shoved my arm away and pointed toward the heavy hospital doors.
"If you can't come up with fifty thousand dollars today, we're getting a divorce right now! I refuse to stay married to a gold-digging, disrespectful failure of a wife!"
Divorce.
That word cleared my head in an instant.
"Fine by me."
My voice wasn't loud, but it was solid as steel.
Mason froze, caught completely off guard by how fast I agreed.
I met his stunned look, delivering every word with razor-sharp precision.
"We can get a divorce. But before we sign anything, we're going over every single bank statement from the last five years, line by line."
…
I turned to grab my purse, where I kept all our financial cards and my personal ledger.
A hand blocked my path.
Hannah.
She stood near the door, blocking the exit with a face full of fake concern, though she couldn't completely mask the smug satisfaction underneath.
"Sophie, why burn bridges?" she whispered, leaning in so close only I could hear, "You've been a jobless housewife out of the game for five whole years. Without Mason, how are you even going to survive? Save your breath. Mason's heart hasn't belonged to you in a long time."
Looking at her smug expression, a wave of anger washed over me.
"Get lost." I shoved her aside.
Hannah's smug face instantly vanished, replaced by an expression of tearful heartbreak, as though she'd suffered some terrible grievance.
She took a dramatic step back, trembling as she looked toward Mason. "Mason, I was only trying to talk to her..."
Before she could finish, Mason bolted forward, grabbing my wrist and jerking me backward while shielding Hannah behind him.
Pain flared up my arm where his fingers dug into my skin.
"Sophie, what the hell is wrong with you?" Mason roared, "Hannah was just trying to help. Can't you understand that?"
"Help?" A bitter, sarcastic laugh escaped my throat. "She's an outsider. What right does she have to meddle in our marriage?"
That instantly set off the powder keg.
Phoebe's shrill voice blasted through the private room. "Hannah isn't an outsider! She's family! She saved this family!"
She stormed up, shoving a finger right in my face.
"When Mason got promoted, do you think he became a director on his own?" she spat, "Hannah begged her uncle, who's an executive, to pull strings for him! You actually thought you had something to do with it?
"And when I failed my college entrance exam, who secretly saved up her own allowance to pay my tuition, comfort me, and push me to keep going?" Phoebe continued, her chest heaving, "It was Hannah!
"Open your eyes and see who actually cares about us!" she yelled, "All you ever do is drain my brother's bank account! Honestly, Hannah is the one who actually deserves to be my sister-in-law!"
Phoebe sounded completely convinced, staring at Hannah with pure, uncritical worship.
Hannah pulled gently on Phoebe's sleeve, putting on a humble, self-sacrificing smile. "Phoebe, don't say that. It was nothing, really."
What a seamless, pathetic tag-team act.
I stopped wasting energy on the peanut gallery and turned back to Mason.
Throughout the entire display, he hadn't said a single word to correct her.
I looked him dead in the eye, my voice dropping. "Mason. Do you actually believe that?"
Mason looked away, unable to hold my gaze, mumbling under his breath, "Phoebe isn't wrong... Hannah really did help out our family a lot..."
"Is that so?" I let out a dry laugh.
Ignoring him, I stepped closer to our great savior standing behind him.
"That works out perfectly, then.
"Hannah, since your uncle is such a big shot, why don't you tell me his name and company?" I said, keeping my tone light, "I used to be a senior partner at a top accounting firm, so my network is pretty huge. Maybe I even know him.
"Oh, and while we're at it, refresh my memory," I added, crossing my arms, "When exactly did you pay Phoebe's tuition, and how did you transfer it? Cash or Venmo? Exactly how much was it? I need to write it down, because if my family owes you a debt, I'm going to make sure every single cent is paid back before this divorce is final."
Chapter 3
Hannah froze for a second before slipping into her damsel-in-distress routine.
"Mason, look at her. I tried to help your family out of kindness without asking for anything back. Why is Sophie treating me like an enemy?"
Hearing her sob, Mason found his backbone again.
"Sophie, that's enough!" he snapped, glaring at me, "Why do you always have to be so damn aggressive?"
Right on cue, my mother-in-law decided the show needed more dramatic flair. She started clutching her chest, letting out high-pitched wails from the bed. "Oh, my chest... It hurts so bad... I'm dying..."
My last shred of patience snapped.
"Whatever. Do whatever you want," I said, my voice dead calm as I looked at the pathetic circus in front of me, "Five years of my life, totally wasted on a pack of ungrateful snakes."
I hoisted my bag over my shoulder and turned toward the door.
A brutal grip clamped onto my wrist, yanking me back so hard my neck whipped. Mason squeezed my arm like a vise, his face completely twisted with rage.
"You don't get to just walk away, Sophie," he growled, "I'm giving you one last chance. Apologize to Hannah and beg my mom for forgiveness. If you do that, I might pretend today never happened."
Apologize? Beg?
I looked at his ugly, entitled face, and a laugh escaped my throat.
"Who the hell do you think you are, Mason?"
“Slap!”
My head whipped sideways, my left ear ringing like a broken speaker, and a burning wave of pain exploded across my cheek.
Mason stood there with his hand still raised, chest heaving like a wounded animal. Then his eyes widened. Panic flickered through his face, like he couldn't process that he had actually hit me.
Hannah covered her mouth, gasping in fake shock, though the sick satisfaction in her eyes gave her completely away.
Phoebe didn't even bother hiding her joy, her mouth stretched into a nasty grin.
What an incredible family drama.
I actually smiled.
Ignoring Mason completely, I swallowed the stinging heat on my cheek, picked up my bag, and turned toward the door again.
As I stepped away, Mason snapped out of his trance and reached out instinctively, calling after me, "Where do you think you're going? Stop right there!"
I didn't slow down. I didn't hesitate for a single second.
Maybe the slap scared him, because this time, he didn't dare grab me again.
Outside the hospital entrance, the blinding glare of the midday sun hit my eyes, burning hot.
I pulled out my phone, my thumb hovering over a contact number I hadn't touched in a long time.
The line connected on the very first ring. A guy's loud, frantic voice blasted out of the speaker. "Sophie! My dear Sophie! You finally remembered I exist? I thought you moved into some mountain cabin without cell service!"
It was my junior colleague, Leo Sullivan.
My lips twitched, my voice rough and scratchy.
"Cut the noise, Leo. Is that Chief Financial Officer spot at your firm still open?"
Silence hit the line for two full seconds before he practically screamed through the phone, "Open? Hell yeah, it's open! I've been keeping it empty for a whole year waiting for you to say the word! Are you really coming back?"
My tone was completely level.
"Yeah. I'm taking the job."
…
Elite Capital, top floor corner office.
I stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling glass, staring down at the endless line of gridlocked traffic snaking through the financial district.
It had been five long years. I'd almost forgotten what the view felt like from up here.
"I knew it, Sophie," Leo said, leaning against my desk with absolute confidence in his eyes, "The moment you stepped back in, these messy books were history."
I slid the audit file across the glass desk and tapped my manicured nail against three specific lines.
"Save the flattery," I replied coolly, "Right here, revenue is artificially inflated, and this bad debt allowance is way too low."
Leo dropped his goofy smile, nodding seriously. "Got it. I'll make the accounting redo the numbers right away."
He paused, glancing at me. "What's the next play?"
"We need to move the company's liquid funds into a new commercial bank account."
I lifted my coffee cup, taking a slow sip as I looked out over the skyline.
"I’ve set up a meeting with Mr. Alan Pierce from Apex Bank to handle the corporate account," I said, a cold smile touching my lips, "And while I'm there... I'll handle a little personal business."
That afternoon, at a quiet café downtown.
I sat across from Mr. Pierce, a slightly heavy, middle-aged bank vice president I used to deal with back in my corporate accounting days.
I slid a sleek new business card across the marble tabletop.
The moment his eyes hit my new title, his stance shifted completely. He sat up straight, holding the card with both hands like a prize. "Well, look at that! CFO Sophie! You really keep your head down until it's time to make moves! What brings you here today?"
Chapter 4
"We've got an eight-figure sum of idle cash sitting in corporate reserves, and I'm looking to park it in a high-yield certificate of deposit," I said, gently tapping my spoon against the edge of the porcelain cup with a soft clink, "I'll let you set a generous interest rate, Mr. Pierce."
Mr. Pierce rubbed his palms together, his face practically creasing into a giant grin. "You're far too kind, Sophie! We can definitely work out a fantastic rate for a balance that size!"
"Partnerships are a two-way street, though," I said, setting the spoon down on the saucer, "I need a small favor in return."
"Name it. Whatever you need."
"I need the full five-year financial statement for an individual bank account under the name Mason Callahan," I replied, "Itemized transactions, as detailed as you can get them."
The smile froze on Mr. Pierce's face.
The coffee cup hovered halfway to his mouth.
He hesitated for only a second before setting the cup back down on the table with a firm thud.
"Sophie, you're putting me in a tight spot here... But don't you worry," he said, lowering his voice, "I'll have my executive assistant hand-deliver the full printout to your office by tomorrow afternoon."
With our official business settled, I was about to exchange standard pleasantries before heading out.
Out of the corner of my eye, I caught a shady figure lurking near the entrance. I followed the reflection in the glass and almost burst out laughing right then and there.
Phoebe was crouched behind a five-foot-tall potted palm tree, convinced she was completely invisible. Only her eyes peered out through the fronds as she craned her neck to spy on me.
Did she honestly think a houseplant was a camouflage cloak? With an IQ like hers, that was probably the pinnacle of her espionage skills.
Deciding she was too far away to catch every detail, she pulled out her phone, zoomed in as far as the lens would go, and snapped a wild streak of photos.
I dragged my eyes back to my table, lazily swirling my latte spoon until a perfect little foam whirlpool formed.
Engaging with an idiot like her would only drag down my standards.
A second later, Phoebe started making a frantic call. She gestured wildly toward my table, her face twisted in a bizarre mix of malicious excitement and smug contempt.
I didn't even need to guess who was on the other end of that line.
Sure enough, in under three minutes, my phone vibrated heavily on the marble tabletop.
The screen flashed: Mason.
I swiped the bar slowly, tapped the speakerphone, and tossed the device back onto the table.
"Sophie!" Mason's voice thundered through the small speaker, barely holding back his rage.
I said nothing, taking a delicate spoonful of sweet milk foam instead.
"Phoebe told me everything!" he barked, "Did you seriously run off to apply for some loan shark cash just to pay for my mom's surgery? Do you actually think pulling a stupid stunt like this is going to make me forgive you?"
His voice oozed with arrogant assumptions and cheap insults.
I stayed completely silent, letting him put on his ridiculous performance.
When I didn't respond, he took it as proof that he'd caught me red-handed, his tone turning even more condescending.
"Listen, out of respect for our marriage, get back here right now," he demanded, "Apologize and beg for forgiveness from my mom, and hand over the rest of the savings from the last five years.
“I make ten grand a month. Over five years, that's six hundred thousand dollars. After basic living expenses, I'll be generous and say you owe me three hundred thousand.
"If you show genuine remorse and return every dollar, I might actually reconsider divorcing you," he added.
Listening to his delusional math and brainless entitlement, a quiet scoff finally broke from my lips.
"Mason," I said, leaning back into the soft leather couch, "Are you suffering from early-onset dementia, or are you just naturally this stupid?"
"You—"
Before he could scream another word, I hit the red button and instantly blocked his number.
Across the table, Mr. Pierce watched the scene with a sharp, intrigued look.
I gave him an apologetic smile. "Sorry about that, Mr. Pierce. An annoying little fly was buzzing around, ruining our coffee break."
Mr. Pierce caught on instantly and let out a hearty laugh. "No worries at all, Sophie. When flies start buzzing, you just swat them dead."
I raised my coffee cup toward him.
"Here's to a great partnership."
We shook hands, and I stepped out into the afternoon air.
Mr. Pierce moved even faster than promised. Barely two hours later, an encrypted document landed straight in my inbox.
Scrolling through the massive, endless list of flagged transactions, I pulled up my contacts and dialed another number.
Chapter 5
"Mr. Reeves," I said, my voice cold as ice, "Send the formal legal notice. And submit the request for a division and full accounting of our marital assets. Also, I want the proceedings open to the public."
…
The legal notice hit the Callahans like a bomb.
Mason stared at the letter, his fingers shaking uncontrollably.
He never expected the quiet, obedient wife who cooked his meals for five years to actually file for divorce and demand a division of their marital assets.
"She’s lost her damn mind!" He paced back and forth across the living room. "Where is a jobless housewife even getting the money for a top-tier lawyer?"
Hannah leaned in close, resting her cheek against his shoulder, a calculated glint flashing in her eyes.
"Mason, don't panic," she coaxed softly, unlocking her phone and showing him a photo, "Take a look at this."
On the screen was a shot of me and Leo Sullivan, sitting in the lobby of Elite Capital, going over files.
Whoever took the picture had been smart about the angle.
From that perspective, Leo leaning forward to point at a spreadsheet while I tilted my head down made us look like we were locked in an intimate embrace.
Hannah’s voice turned dripping venom.
"She’s obviously been cheating on you for a while, and this guy is her new sugar daddy! Mason, stop worrying and sue her for infidelity and hidden assets!"
Her cheeks flushed with cruel excitement as she painted the picture.
"Think about it! If you prove she cheated, she's legally at fault! She won't get a single cent of your money and she'll walk away with absolutely nothing! Let's see how cocky she acts then!"
Mason’s eyes lit up, grabbing onto the idea like a lifeline.
"Yes! Sue her!" His eyes burned with terrifying intensity. "I'm going to let the whole world see what kind of trash Sophie really is!"
Driven completely reckless by revenge, he unlocked his phone and scrambled through his contact list.
"That reporter from the Daily Gazette... And that viral scandal blogger! I'm giving them all the trial details! I want a public hearing!
"I want her pinned to a stake in front of this entire city!"
The night before trial.
Mr. Reeves, my lawyer, pushed a media report across the desk, looking grim.
"Sophie, the press is ugly," he warned, "They bought off sensational news outlets and paid bots to push the narrative."
I flipped through the pages. The headlines were filled with words like gold-digger, cheater, and homewrecker. The internet was completely ruthless, drowning the comments in threats and hate.
Five years ago, a smear campaign like this would have broken me.
Now, it just felt pathetic.
My phone vibrated with Mason's final ultimatum: [See you in court. I'm going to show you what happens to people who betray me.]
My thumb tapped the screen, sending back a single word.
[Fine.]
…
The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity.
Rows of camera lenses were pointed straight at me like searchlights.
Mason sat across the aisle, wearing a look of total victory.
Hannah sat right in the front row of the gallery as a "star witness," her eyes brimming with provocation.
The gavel struck, opening the session.
Mason’s lawyer attacked immediately, casting the zoomed-in photo onto the massive projector screen in the middle of the room.
"Your Honor, my client accuses the defendant, Sophie Bennett, of engaging in an illicit extramarital affair while still legally married!"
The moment the image hit the screen, gasps and quiet whispers erupted from the gallery.
Flashbulbs burst across the room in a blinding wave of white light.
