My boyfriend, Ethan Carter, tried to break up with me for the sixth time.
This time, I didn't go crawling back.
I moved out of our apartment, changed my number, and left the city.
Six months later, I pushed open the door to the private room where he was having dinner with his friends.
Ethan raised an eyebrow and stood up, walking toward me.
"So the silent treatment's over?"
He reached for my hand. I stepped back.
He froze for a second, then laughed.
"Half a year and you're still mad?"
I let out a small laugh.
He thought I'd come back to make up.
He was wrong.
I lifted my hand and let the ring on my finger catch the light.
Meeting his stunned expression, I kept my voice flat.
"Sorry."
"I'm here to pick up my husband."
…
Ethan stared for a beat, then burst out laughing.
His eyes flicked to the ring on my finger before landing back on mine.
"Claire Bennett, that joke's not funny."
His mouth twisted, mocking.
"Six months, and you're telling me you got married?"
I let my hand drop and asked calmly, "Is there a problem?"
I looked at him.
"Silent treatment past three days means it's over. Your words, right? We went silent for six months. I got married. What's wrong with that?"
Ethan stared at me, then gave a soft laugh.
He stepped aside.
"Fine. Go on. Point out which one of them is your husband."
His lips curled.
"Perfect. I'd love to meet him."
Laughter erupted from inside the room.
They were all Ethan's friends.
The girl sitting dead center was Chloe Wilson, the new assistant at his company.
I frowned slightly, pulling out my phone to make sure I hadn't walked into the wrong room.
Before I could unlock it, Chloe was already up and walking over.
Her smile was still there.
"Claire, don't tell me you found out we were meeting here and showed up on purpose to say all that?"
She paused, glancing around at the group.
"Or did you actually marry one of Ethan's friends?"
She couldn't hold back her laugh.
The room joined in with playful denials.
"Claire, come on, you have to tell us. Which one of us did you marry?"
"Not me. Everyone knows your whole heart belongs to Ethan."
"Don't drag me into this. I'm staying single."
"Definitely not me. I've got a girlfriend."
One guy just stared at his phone, silent, looking uncomfortable.
I didn't react.
Chloe smiled and asked me, "So, Claire, who's your husband? They all say it's not them."
My expression didn't change.
Ethan lifted an eyebrow.
"You said you're picking up your husband. Who?"
I was about to say I'd walked into the wrong room, but Chloe cut me off, looking like she had it all figured out.
"Come on, Claire. If you just wanted to make up with Ethan, you could've said so. We wouldn't have judged."
Her lips curved.
"It's not like it's the first time. We get it."

I lowered my eyes and didn't argue.
Chloe wasn't wrong.
In five years of dating, Ethan and I hadn't fought all that often.
But every fight had been because of her.
And every time, I was the one who broke the silence.
The sixth fight was over the smart lock at our apartment. Chloe had access to it.
She had a keycode. A temporary door code. Ethan had even added her to the family list on our Ring doorbell.
Even the Nest Hub in the living room had changed its greeting from "Welcome home, Claire" to "Welcome to your new home, Chloe."
Ethan said Chloe had just moved to Seattle, hadn't locked down a rental yet, and was crashing at ours for a few days.
For convenience. That's why he gave her access.
But he never told me.
Never asked me.
Never checked whether I was okay with it. He just informed me after the fact.
We had a huge blowup.
Watching me lose it, he blurted, "Then let's break up," and walked out with Chloe.
That night, he took her to the small apartment he kept for late work nights.
I only found out because Chloe posted it on Instagram.
This time, I wasn't going to smooth things over.
The next morning, I packed up, moved out of the apartment we shared, and left Seattle.
Which meant Ethan still thought we were just giving each other the silent treatment.
Still thought I'd come here to patch things up.
"You're all reading this wrong."
I looked around the room, my voice clear.
"I really did get married. And I really am here to pick up my husband."
The smile faded from Ethan's mouth.
He looked at me, his face darkening.
"Claire, enough."
"If you're going to make something up, at least make it believable. You put on a ring and suddenly you're married? If you came to see me, just say so. You don't need the story."
Chloe jumped right in.
"Yeah, Claire, no one's going to laugh at you for that."
Ethan's face twisted with irritation.
I knew that look too well.
Every time I pushed him about Chloe, that was the face I got.
Then he'd start a fight over her.
Even now, he was convinced I'd come around and beg like I always had.
Even hearing me say I was married, he didn't believe me.
One of Ethan's friends chimed in with a grin.
"Claire, it's been half a year of silent treatment. Time to make up with Ethan, don't you think? Chloe's right. Nobody's going to laugh. We're used to it by now."
"Claire, you're still upset about the door code thing?"
Chloe blinked at me.
"I knew you were mad, so I had Ethan delete it the very next day. He took me off the Ring app too."
She paused, then added, "Don't worry. I didn't actually move in."
She said it like she'd made some huge sacrifice.
"Claire, don't hold it against me anymore, okay?"
She kept going.
"If it really bothers you that much, I can apologize."
She said the word apology, but nothing in her face looked apologetic.
She'd said the same thing before.
Except every time, Ethan cut in for me.
Said she'd done nothing wrong.
Said I wouldn't hold it against her.
Wouldn't stoop to that.
He never bothered asking if I would. He just answered for me.
Same as now.
Ethan glanced at me and said to Chloe, "You didn't do anything wrong. Why are you apologizing?"
"Ethan, you're being mean."
Chloe pouted.
"I'm just trying to help. If Claire actually breaks up with you over this, she'll blame me."
Ethan sighed. "You didn't do anything. Why would anyone blame you?"
Watching them be openly affectionate, I felt nothing.
In Ethan's mind, Chloe was always right.
She'd done nothing wrong, so she owed no apology.
And I was just the jealous, paranoid girlfriend with a dirty mind.
The old me would've fought him on the spot.
But now I just said, "If there's nothing else, I'm leaving."

I turned to go, and Ethan grabbed my hand.
His eyes locked on mine, his voice dropping.
"Claire, half a year and you're still doing this?"
"Yeah, I didn't ask you back then. But you made your point. The silent treatment's dragged on long enough. Isn't it time to drop it?"
Drop it.
That was Ethan's favorite word for me.
He drove drunk Chloe home and told me not to make a scene, it was just a work thing.
I knew Chloe had feelings for him and asked him to move her to another team. He said I was making a scene.
He went on a business trip alone with Chloe but told me it was a team trip. When I found out and confronted him, I was making a scene.
And now, still, I was making a scene.
I shook off his hand.
"You think I'm making a scene?"
Ethan snapped, "What else would you call it? Or are you waiting for me to come chase after you?"
I looked at him and finally laughed.
"You don't need to chase me."
"You should focus on cleaning up whatever's going on with your assistant."
Ethan froze.
Then his brow furrowed.
"Claire, what's that supposed to mean?"
I turned to Chloe.
"Three months ago, I came across an anonymous post on Reddit."
The title:
"I'm pregnant with my boss's baby. What do I do?"
In the comments, she said the father was her boss. Also her college classmate.
She'd been staying at his apartment. One night after too many drinks, they'd slept together.
But he had a girlfriend.
Except now, because of her, they were fighting.
My gut is usually right.
By the time I registered what I was doing, I'd already clicked on the profile.
There was no real name.
But on the profile, there was one office selfie.
The face wasn't visible. Just half a jaw and the lanyard of a work badge.
That pink lanyard, I'd seen it a hundred times.
Chloe wore it every single day.
And her boss slash college classmate could only be Ethan.
Chloe's eyes went red as she stepped forward.
"Claire, what are you talking about?"
"Even if you and Ethan are fighting because of me, you can't just accuse me like this."
The silence stretched. Then someone finally spoke.
"Claire, you're not talking about the post Chloe made, are you?"
I looked over.
The others shifted, uncomfortable.
One of them cleared his throat before explaining.
"That was a punishment. Game night."
"Chloe was drunk. Everyone dared her to post something crazy on a burner account. She deleted it right after."
"We told her at the time it was a bad joke. Said you might see it."
"Guess the algorithm actually served it up to you."
"Claire, you should've asked us first."
I stood there, stunned.
Ethan caught up too.
"That's what you meant?"
"Chloe posted it as a game penalty. Claire, couldn't you have just asked?"
Chloe's eyes were still red.
"So that's what this was about. Claire, it really was just a dare. I never thought you'd actually see it."
"You've got your explanation. Can we drop this now?"
