During my baby’s sip-and-see, I spotted my wife kissing her crush in the nursery, even though she had once said that both the baby and I were her greatest blessings.
I squashed down my anger and took several photos.
During the celebration, the photographer asked me to move closer so we could take a family portrait, but I declined.
“The baby isn’t mine. I’m an outsider, so I won’t be in the picture."
While everyone stared at me in confusion, I displayed the photos of their affair on the big screen.
Chapter 1
e photos looked painfully clear on the big screen.
Layla Green, my wife, and Howard Hunter, her crush, were making out with each other in the nursery.
In the background were blue balloons and star-shaped lights I had placed myself.
I could even see how lost Layla was in her passion. It was an expression I had never seen before.
The hall fell silent.
Several of seconds later, a commotion erupted.
Layla’s face was drained of color. As she stood there, she swayed, and her lips quivered, but she could not say a single thing.
Her parents, Peter and Lola, were the first to react to the situation.
“Luke, have you lost your mind? What on earth is this? How could you photoshop this to slander Layla!” Lola screeched and charged at me to slap me.
I stepped aside out of her reach and glared at her coldly.
“Do you think that I photoshopped this? Ask your daughter if she thinks so. Get her to say that it’s fake in front of everyone here.”
Lola was rendered speechless and turned to Layla.
But Layla had already turned completely pale. As she stared at me, panic finally appeared in her eyes.
“Luke, that’s not true. I can explain…” she whispered with a quivering voice.
“You want to explain? All right. Go on.”
I crossed my arms and watched her calmly.
Just then, Howard squeezed his way out of the crowd and shielded the swaying Layla behind him.
In a self-righteous manner, he said to me, “Mr. York, you’re a man. How could you use stunt like this to humiliate a woman who has just given birth?! If you have a problem, take it out on me!”
I laughed in exasperation. “Come at you? Who do you think you are?”
The moment I finished speaking, Lola’s slap landed on my face.
It was loud and clear.
“You piece of trash! You’re a heartless monster! Layla gave birth to your baby, and this is how you treat her?!”
She was so agitated that she wanted to lunge at me.
My parents, John and Mary, rushed over to stop her.
My face stung, but my heart felt nothing.
Over the past year, I had been so emotionally hurt that my heart had turned numb.
Layla changed ever since Howard came back.
She started working overtime frequently, changed her phone password, and got a lot of branded handbags that I never bought for her.
I had confronted her once, only for her to snap at me, “It’s my company’s bonus. Why are you asking me so many questions?”
Then, she turned around and refused to spare me another glance.
For the sake of the baby I thought was mine and the family I once treasured, I chose to deceive myself and squash down all my suspicions and pain.
I thought that once the baby was born, things would get better.
But all I did at present was watch Layla cry until her shoulders trembled while Howard hugged her in a protective manner.
She did not even look at me once and just leaned in another man’s embrace like a delicate flower.
I grabbed the microphone. My voice wasn’t loud, but it carried clearly throughout the hall.
Chapter 2
“Sorry for the fiasco, everyone. But since all of you are here today, I need to make myself clear.
“One, Layla cheated on me with Mr. Howard Hunter over here. Two, the baby isn’t mine. Three, I am going to divorce her today.”
Before I finished talking, Layla’s eyes rolled back, and she fainted.
Howard and her parents immediately surrounded her, causing the scene to descend into further chaos.
“Layla, wake up!”
“Call the ambulance!”
Peter pointed at me with rage-filled eyes. “Luke, if anything happens to Layla, I’m going to make you pay!”
I sneered as I watched this fiasco play out.
Make me pay?
Who exactly was going to make who pay here?
My parents helped me deal with the aftermath.
“Luke… what exactly happened?” My mother’s eyes were red with tears.
My father sighed and patted my shoulder. “Don’t ask for the time being. Let him take some time to calm down.”
I said nothing and just numbly watched the hotel employees clean up the mess.
My phone rang. It was from Lola.
I hung up, but she called again.
I rejected the call again, but she called me a third time, and I answered it in annoyance. Lola’s roars immediately came through. “Luke, you piece of trash! Are you a monster?! Layla is still in the emergency room! Where are you?!
“If anything happens to her, I’m going to make your family pay!”
I brought the phone away from my ear. Once she was done yelling, I asked coldly, “In the emergency room, is she? Does she have acute appendicitis or a sudden brain hemorrhage? She just got too into her act and was so worked up that she fainted. That won’t kill her.”
“You heartless monster!”
“I’m going to repeat myself. Whether she dies or not has nothing to do with me.”
I then hung up and blocked her number.
Half an hour later, my mother still dragged me to the hospital.
The moment we reached the door to Layla’s room, I heard Lola’s wails.
“My poor daughter! How could you have married such a heartless man?! He’s trying to drive you to your death!”
Peter stood by the side. When he saw me, he rushed over and grabbed my collar. “Luke, you need to explain yourself! How could you slander Layla this way?!”
I let him grab me as I took out a folded piece of paper from my pocket before flinging it into his face.
“An explanation, is it? Here it is.”
Stunned, Peter let me go and picked up the paper in puzzlement.
That was an expedited paternity test report.
[The test results exclude Luke York as the biological father of the infant with 99.9999% certainty.]
Peter’s eyes flew wide with shock. His hands trembled around the paper as he kept reading it.
Lola stopped screeching at that point and drew closer to look.
When she read the words on it, she froze.
My parents drew closer to look before turning to me in surprise.
My mother opened her mouth, but she said nothing in the end. She only walked over to caress the finger marks that still hadn’t faded.
Layla had already “woken up” at some point.
She leaned against the bed rest with a pale face as she stared at the report with dull eyes.
“It’s fake…
“It has to be fake,” she murmured.
Chapter 3
I scoffed before going up to her bed to look down at her.
“Layla, why are you still keeping up with that act at this point? I had my suspicions a long time ago. In the year since Howard returned, you have worked overtime more times than in the past three years combined.
“Do you really think I don’t know where you got your handbags and jewelry from? How could you have possibly bought it with the money I give you? I gave you plenty of chances to tell me the truth.
“I would have been satisfied if you had been honest just once. But what did you do? You took my money without a shred of guilty conscience and stayed in my house while you flirted with your ex. You even planned to have me take care of your baby for you.
“Truly, you’re the most disgusting woman I’ve ever seen.”
Finally, she broke down and covered her face as she cried.
Peter’s face turned red. He pointed a finger at me, but even after a long time had passed, he could not say a thing.
Lola collapsed on the floor and started kicking up a hysterical scene. “What has this world gone to?! You cheated my daughter into a marriage! You worked with other people to scam us out of our money!”
To that, I only said coldly, “Enough, stop with your yelling. I’m just telling you that my lawyer will contact you tomorrow. I’m getting a divorce from Layla, and she’s walking out with nothing.
“The house, car, and everything are my pre-marital assets. She’s not getting a single cent.
“As for the baby, its biological father can come and take it away. If you’re unhappy with that, feel free to sue me. I’ll submit all the evidence to the court.”
I turned and left. I did not want to stay for even a second longer.
Lola’s screeches and curses turned even shriller, and my parents hurried after me.
The next day, I returned home to pack up my things.
But the moment I opened the door, I was stunned.
Peter, Lola, and Layla were all sitting on the couch like nothing had happened.
Lola was munching on snacks while Peter read the newspaper. As for Layla, she was playing with the baby that was not mine.
The tea table was a mess, and I could see snack crumbs all over the floor.
My parents had bought the house outright, and I had furnished it bit by bit. I also had a housekeeper take care of it on a regular basis to make sure it stayed clean.
“Why are you still here?” I asked coldly.
Lola did not even look at me and just said sarcastically, “Oh, if it isn’t Mr. Busy. This is your house, but it’s also Layla’s house. Why can’t we be here?”
“Her house?” I laughed in exasperation. “Whose name is written on the property deed? Did she even contribute to the house?”
“She already made the largest contribution by marrying you!”
Lola threw her snacks on the floor and stood up. “I’m telling you right now, you may be able to get a divorce, but half of the house has to belong to Layla! You’re a man! How could you fight over a house with a woman who just gave birth?!”
“I’m going to repeat myself. The house is my pre-marital asset and has nothing to do with her. You need to get out by today!”
“We’re not leaving! What can you do about it?” Lola planted her hands on her hips and looked completely fearless.
Layla had not said a single thing throughout the entire affair, but at that moment, she stood up with the baby.
Her eyes were teary as she stared at me pitifully. “I’m sorry, Luke. Can’t you give me another chance? For the baby’s sake, let’s not get a divorce…”
Chapter 4
“Shut up!” I snapped. “I don’t want to hear you talk about the baby again. It’s disgusting!”
Layla shuddered and started crying.
Peter threw the newspaper on the floor and stood up to point an accusatory finger at me. “Luke, you’re crossing the line! Layla is still breastfeeding and is weak. Are you seriously unable to tolerate such a feeble woman and her baby?
“Did your conscience die in a ditch?”
I said nothing else and called the police. “Hello. I’d like to report several trespassers in my home, and they’re refusing to leave. Please send someone to deal with the situation.”
Lola rushed over to snatch my phone, but I avoided her.
The police soon arrived, but after listening to Lola give an exaggerated account about how I, a piece of trash, was abandoning my wife and child, the police officers only chose to mediate the situation.
After they left, Lola became even more smug.
“Go ahead, call the police again, I dare you! No one can chase us out!”
I decided not to argue with them any further and went back to my parents’ home.
The next day, I hired a locksmith. While Layla’s family went out, I switched to the most advanced fingerprint lock.
Then, I threw everything that they owned, including the cradle, out.
Once I was done, I intended to leave, only to receive a call from the company’s receptionist.
“Mr. York, you need to come to the company. A group of people has arrived at the lobby, and they say they’re your family. They drew a banner on the floor and said that you abandoned your wife. They’re saying you’re trying to drive her to her death…”
That family actually went to my company!
I rushed to the company.
Lola had brought with her around eight relatives I had never seen before, and they were either sitting or lounging in the lobby. In front of them was a white banner with words painted on it with red paint.
[Luke York Abandoned Wife and Baby! Where Is The Justice In This?!]
Lola sat on the floor and hugged her knees. Her cries were deafeningly loud, and she kept lying as she cursed me out.
Plenty of people passed through the lobby, and everyone talked about them. Some even took out their phones to take photos.
I strode over and growled at them while suppressing my rage. “What on earth are you doing?!”
The moment Lola saw me, her cries turned even louder, and she grabbed my legs.
“You heartless monster! You finally showed your face! You chased us out to drive us to a corner, didn’t you? Everyone, look! It’s this man! He became a horrible person after he got rich and got himself a mistress!
“He even chased out his wife after she gave birth to a baby for him!”
My colleagues and clients started looking at me differently.
The security guards came over to pull her away, but Lola started rolling on the floor to throw a tantrum.
At that moment, my direct superior, William Wilson, walked out of his office with a stormy expression.
He cast a glance at the farce on the floor before turning to me and asking me to go into his office.
The moment he shut the door, he threw a stack of printouts of forums and screenshots from social media on the desk.
On them were all posts accusing me of being a horrible man, and the headlines were each more sensational than the last.
[EXPOSING MY SELF-MADE HUSBAND: HOW HE FORCED ME TO DIVORCE HIM RIGHT AFTER I GAVE BIRTH]
[HE ABANDONED HIS OWN SON FOR HIS MISTRESS!]
Layla made herself out to be a pitiful wife who endured humiliation and meekly contributed to the marriage for the sake of love. As for me, I was an ungrateful and heartless piece of trash.
The posts included photographs of my cold expression during the sip-and-see, along with pictures of Layla looking pale and fragile as she cried in the hospital.
Chapter 5
Mr. Wilson pointed at the stack of printouts with anger in his voice. “Luke, the company isn’t your personal backyard! Look at the mess you created! The entire company is watching you make a fool of yourself right now! What are the clients going to think of us?!
“I don’t care what mess you have at home. You need to deal with it within three days, or you’re leaving!”
I stood still and found myself unable to say a single thing.
I just clenched my fists tightly, and my nails dug into my palms.
After walking out of Mr. Wilson’s office, I could sense my colleagues giving me strange looks.
I did not return to my desk. Instead, I went to the emergency exit. As I leaned against the cold wall, I forced myself to stay calm.
Sitting still while and waiting for disaster was not my style.
Did the Greens think that they could crush me with public opinion? They were too naive.
I took out my phone and called a number I had not contacted in a long time. It was to Ryan, a private detective.
“I need you to look into someone for me. His name is Howard Hunter. I want all his previous interactions with Layla Green too, especially during the year he came back to the country. The more detailed the better. Money isn’t a problem.”
After I hung up, I returned to my desk, but my phone suddenly vibrated.
I received a message.
When I opened it, my eyes turned wide with shock.
There was an audio file attached to it, along with a text message.
[Mr. York, your mother-in-law sent this to the executives of the company, including me. You should listen to it.]
The sender was Michael, Mr. Wilson’s secretary.
I put on my earphones and played the audio.
That was a recording of my conversation with Layla in the hospital, but it had been edited until it no longer resembled the original version.
All that was left of my words in the audio file were my coldest, most heartless remarks.
“Whether she dies or not has nothing to do with me.
“I’m getting a divorce from Layla, and she’s walking out with nothing.
“Shut up! It’s disgusting!”
But all of Layla’s lies had been left intact.
To think that they had such a trump card lying around.
No matter what sort of explanation I offered at that point, it would look bad.
Just as my heart sank, my phone vibrated again. It was a message from my friend.
[Got clues for the things you want, Luke. Howard Hunter has an ex he dumped for Layla. She’s really mad about it, and she has plenty of evidence against them. This is her number. She might be your best chance to get out of this mess.]
Before I could wrap my head around this, my phone rang again. This time, it was Mr. Wilson calling me from an internal call.
“Luke, come to my office right now!” His voice was cold.
I got up and went into his office.
When I opened the door, Mr. Wilson was sitting behind the desk and staring at me with a cold expression.
He said nothing and pushed his phone to me. It was playing the edited audio file.
Once the audio file finished playing, he asked coldly, “What do you have to say about this, Luke?”
There was no way I could defend myself. As I looked at his disappointed and enraged eyes, I decided to give up and tell him that I was going to resign.
But at that moment, my phone vibrated.
I had received a message from an unknown number.
Numbly, I took it out to take a look.
[They edited the audio file, but I have the full version. Do you want it, Luke York?]
