I was the second-to-last person to find out my husband was sleeping with my best friend.
Our mutual friends were all betting on whether I'd leave him.
"Rachel won't divorce him. Luca makes too much money!"
"If you ask me, Rachel's just too spineless. Otherwise, why would Luca stray?"
"Hey, Luca, say something—is your wife threatening divorce?"
My dear best friend was sitting on Luca's lap, smiling as she kissed him.
"I don't think Rachel will divorce. She's a parasite. She wouldn't dare."
Luca raised an eyebrow, stubbed out his cigar, and suddenly pulled her into a deep kiss.
I stood right outside the door, shaking.
It hit me—they'd deliberately called me over. They wanted to see my reaction.
But I was even more spineless than they thought. I didn't even dare go in.
I pulled out my phone and dialed my best friend's husband.
"Sarah's drunk. She's at the Corsica Club. Come get her."
Sarah's husband, Enzo Scala, had done time for assault. He should be braver than me.
"Who's she drinking with?"
Enzo's voice was cold.
I answered immediately:
"Friends. Some guys from the family. Hands all over her. You better hurry."
Enzo said okay and that he'd be right there.
I hung up and turned to leave.
Sarah had once told me smugly:
"Enzo looks like a pushover, but he almost killed a man for me once."
"After that, he started carrying a gun everywhere, just in case someone messed with me again."
I'd just reached the club entrance when my phone rang. It was Luca.
His tone was lazy. "You're here, aren't you?"
I parted my lips but said nothing.
He continued, "Waiter said you stood outside listening for a while. You heard everything?"
His voice was gentle. To me, it was cruel.
I said softly, "Mm."
Luca laughed. "Spineless."
Yeah. Everyone knew I was spineless.
Since school, I'd only ever followed behind Luca. Without him, I might not have graduated.
"No way. You won't even come in?"
"Hiding your head in the sand is just pathetic."
People around were egging him on, laughing without shame.
Then Sarah grabbed the phone, grinning:
"If we'd known you were this scared of losing him, we wouldn't have bothered hiding it."
"But doing it behind your back—so thrilling."
"I tasted your man for you. He's good. I'll be keeping him."
"Sarah, keep going and she'll cry."
"Luca, aren't you gonna comfort her?"
As soon as Sarah finished, someone else jumped in.
This time, Luca spoke seriously:
"Enough. If she cries, I'll have to comfort her again."
"Rachel's not like you. She's easier to handle. Don't bully her."
He took back the phone, his voice clearer.
"Where are you? The bathroom? I'll come find you. Hard to get a cab here."
I looked toward the hallway. He stood there with the phone raised, froze, then hung up when he saw me.
Luca's expression was satisfied. Almost enjoyably cruel.
He walked over and ruffled my hair.
"She's different from you. You're Mrs. Moretti. Why are you crying?"
"Relax. I'm not divorcing you."
His tone was condescending. Like petting a dog.
Then Sarah stumbled out, holding her head.
She staggered right into Luca.
He wrapped an arm around her waist immediately, palm against her bare skin.
Sarah leaned into his chest and glanced at me.
"Luca, my head hurts. They were pouring drinks down my throat."
"Take me home. Rachel knows now anyway. No point hiding."
"She won't mind, right?"
She looked right at me when she said it. Pure provocation.
My phone buzzed. Enzo, asking for the club address.
I sent him the location.

After sending it, I looked up at Luca.
"What if I do mind?"
Luca's face showed reluctance. He tried to push her away, but Sarah slumped against him like wet clay.
"We've done it so many times. Why pretend to be a gentleman now?"
She laughed, then looked at me.
"Didn't you say it yourself? Rachel's like a dead fish in bed. No fun at all!"
She was talking to Luca, but staring at me.
Luca glanced at me nervously.
"It was just a joke. I was humoring her."
My nails dug into my palms. I said lightly, "Oh."
"Then I'll come with you to take her home."
"What did you say?"
Sarah asked in disbelief.
I looked up, firm.
"Her head hurts, right? Luca and I will take her home."
I grabbed her stubbornly, forcing her to lean on me.
Luca blinked, then seemed amused.
He flicked my nose.
"Oh, finally jealous? A little temper's fine."
His words and actions were intimate. Like nothing had happened.
I felt sick inside.
But I showed nothing.
In high school, a gang leader's girlfriend cornered me in an alley and cut up my clothes.
I wore the same expression then.
Luca warned her off for me.
He frowned at me for a long time, then took off his jacket and put it on me.
"You should have some temper."
Later, that woman never showed up again. Luca thought it was his doing.
But it was because her father caught her kissing the gang leader.
And her father was there because I led him there.
She was forced to move away. Of course she never bothered me again.
I was happy to let Luca play hero. So I never told him.
"But I booked a hotel room. Who said I'm going home?"
Sarah's voice cut in. She blinked, smug.
She looked at Luca. "Don't you wanna come? But bringing Rachel isn't a good idea."
Luca's gaze moved between us. Before he could speak, I said:
"Luca, come home with me."
I stared at him, softening my tone.
Sarah wrapped her leg around his right in front of me.
"That nightgown you wanted me to wear—I had it sent to the hotel. Miss it, and I won't wear it next time."
Luca's pupils contracted. Interest deepened.
"Rachel, go back first."
He said it to me.
My eyes reddened. "Are you sure?"
He nodded, frowning. "Be good. If you don't want a divorce."
I took a deep breath. Even breathing hurt.
Sarah sneered. "Don't tell me you wanna stay and watch? Too cruel for you."

I didn't speak. She leaned close and whispered:
"Do you know when our first time was?"
"When you miscarried. In the hospital. We did it in your bed."
"Rachel, if you're smart, divorce him."
I trembled. That was my and Luca's first child.
I'd waited so long, taken such care, and still lost it.
While I was hospitalized, Luca said he was handling clan business. I got through it alone.
So that's it… I stared at Sarah:
"Why?"
"Luca makes money. He's handsome. Men like him are rare."
"Sooner or later someone steals him. Better me."
"As for mine, I've wanted to dump him for ages."
I checked the time. Enzo should be here in ten minutes.
"Will he let you go? Didn't you say he has a temper? Almost killed someone? Aren't you scared?"
At Enzo's name, Sarah's tone cooled.
"He's a brainless brute. I crook my finger, he does anything."
"Soon I'll trick him into signing divorce papers. He's as easy to fool as you."
She looked nonchalant. Didn't take Enzo seriously at all.
"What if he sees you cheating?"
Fear flickered in Sarah's eyes, then faded.
"He won't find out. He's probably collecting debts right now."
"Training him's like training a dog. You wouldn't get it!"
I sneered inside, glancing at my phone.
Enzo: 【Almost there.】
Suddenly I didn't want to let them off easy. I wanted to see a mad dog bite.
So I looked at Luca, wounded.
"I'll wait in the hotel lobby. Come home with me after, okay?"
I was utterly humble. Surprise crossed Luca's eyes.
"Why are you so… Is it really that you can't live without me?"
Sarah cut in: "Rachel, why are you so pathetic!"
"Even like this, you're still throwing yourself at him. What for?"
I was impervious.
"In college, without Luca, I don't know what I'd have done."
"He paid for everything. Four years. Then he supported me."
"Sarah, I've been unable to leave him for a long time."
Luca really was good at making money.
Early twenties, hundreds of thousands. In college, millions.
With him, I never worried about money.
That's how I got my master's, then my doctorate.
Sarah was speechless, face black with rage.
Luca glanced at her impatiently. "Don't talk about her like that."
Then: "I told you. Don't drag Rachel into this."
"I can't divorce her and marry you. Or do you have other ideas?"
Sarah's expression changed. She immediately fawned:
"That's not what I meant. I just don't want her ruining the mood."
"I won't!" I shook my head.
Luca looked helpless. "Good girl. This is the last time. I'll treat you well from now on, okay?"
I nodded, satisfied. "Okay. I believe you."
Luca's eyes paused. "Silly girl. What would you do without me?"
Without him, I'd inherit everything.
We got in Luca's car. Enzo messaged again.
【I'm here. Which room?】
I looked up. A dark figure rushed into the club, stopped by security.
Enzo's face was furious. On the edge of control.
I quickly messaged him:
【Sorry, Sarah's wasted. Taking her to the hotel to sober up. Come straight there.】
Then I looked at Luca:
"Do you two have to do this? Luca, one more chance. Let's keep some dignity."
Sarah laughed. "Can't handle it, don't play. Thought you were generous."
Luca darkened. "I said this is the last time. Besides, can you leave me?"
I said, "Mm. Fine. I won't make a scene."
I glanced at my phone. Enzo:
【Thanks. Twenty minutes.】
