第1章
(Rietta’s POV)
On the day of the Moonbond ceremony rehearsal, I arrived at the ceremonial grounds and found my future mate, Alpha Fredrik Silverthorne, arguing with my best friend, Glyneth Ravenhurst, about the color of the moonstone carpet for the sacred hall.
Glyneth followed him through the hall, lightly hitting his arm a few times until he finally raised his hands in surrender.
"Fine, fine, dark silver it is. Whatever you want. Happy now, Lady?"
His pleading words, spoken in an indulgent tone, made even the attendants laugh.
"See? Our future Alpha and Luna are truly close."
Fredrik did not correct them, while Glyneth simply bit her lip as the tips of her ears turned slightly red.
No one noticed that I had arrived.
Not until one of the attendants spotted me and quickly explained, "You all have it wrong. This is the future Luna."
Hearing the voice, Glyneth turned around, saw me, and hurried over to hook her arm through mine.
"Oh, Rietta, do something about your future mate. He's always teasing me."
"You're my best friend. How could I not know what color you like? But he still wanted to argue with me about it."
Fredrik strolled over behind her and said lazily, "Who's teasing who? You've been hitting me this entire time."
"That's because you deserved it, Alpha."
I stood there quietly, watching the two of them exchange words, and a strange fog settled over my mind.
Scenes like this had been happening ever since our years at the royal academy. Countless times. They always decided everything for me while they bickered. My opinion never seemed important.
This Moonbond ceremony not only belonged to Fredrik, but to me as well.
Yet not a single person in that hall had asked whether I liked the dark silver carpet.
If my opinion was unnecessary from the beginning to the end of this ceremony, then perhaps I was unnecessary as the bride too.
***
While they continued arguing, Fredrik noticed the ceremonial bouquet the attendants had prepared and frowned.
"Replace those flowers."
A soft laugh escaped him as he glanced toward Glyneth.
"I clearly remember someone saying she disliked pure white flowers at Moonbond ceremonies. She said they looked like..."
"Like funeral flowers."
Glyneth stuck out her tongue at me, her eyes curving into a smile.
"Rietta, you're not angry, are you? I only mentioned it once. Who would have thought your future mate would remember something like that? I'd already forgotten."
The attendant glanced nervously at me.
I looked at the bouquet as well.
White moonbells.
My favorite flower.
The flower Fredrik had promised would be the only one decorating our ceremony. But now he probably did not remember making that promise either.
"Replace them."
Even if I objected, no one would listen.
Glyneth and Fredrik immediately moved on to discussing the enchanted table coverings, the silver chair charms, and even the main color theme of the sacred hall, changing everything one piece at a time.
The Moonbond Overseer stared at the venue that had become almost unrecognizable and finally lowered her voice.
"Lady Wildmoor, those were all choices you worked so hard to make. You even visited several Moon Kingdom artisans to arrange them."
"It's fine," I replied. "Let them change it."
Either way, I no longer intended to go through with this Moonbond ceremony.
When Glyneth said she wanted to try on my ceremonial gown, Fredrik had no objection at all.
"Rietta, Glyneth is the trendsetter in our pack. If anything looks wrong, she can give advice. Letting her try it isn't a bad idea."
I watched as Glyneth rushed into the changing chamber, and my words came out sharper.
"Since you care so much about her opinion, why not let her take my place for the entire rehearsal?"
I met Fredrik's slightly surprised gaze as the bitterness inside my chest grew heavier.
"That way, she can check whether the ceremony is perfect from beginning to end."
Perhaps he heard the edge in my voice. He frowned and looked ready to respond, but at that moment, the changing chamber door opened.
Glyneth stepped out wearing the gown.
She spun gracefully beneath the glow of moon crystals and smiled brightly at Fredrik.
"Well? How does it look?"
Fredrik’s gaze drifted from my face and settled on Glyneth. The open admiration in his eyes cut through me like a blade, sharp enough to make my chest ache.
It hurt.
"It looks beautiful."
The gown had been crafted using my measurements, so naturally it did not fit Glyneth properly. But Fredrik either forgot that fact or simply did not care.
Instead, he agreed to every adjustment she suggested, from the waistline to the overall fit.
Only after they finished discussing the alterations did Glyneth glance at me through the mirror.
"Rietta, don't be upset. I'm only helping you. When the ceremony comes and you look stunning, it reflects well on me too, doesn't it?"
Only then did Fredrik look back at me. He smiled casually.
"Just make the changes Glyneth suggested. She's a trendsetter. Her taste is better than yours."
I remained silent, said nothing at all.
Fredrik took my silence as agreement and immediately returned to discussing the gown with Glyneth.
I looked at the two of them standing close together with their backs facing me. Then I quietly turned around and left.
Since the gown had already been altered to fit her measurements, perhaps they should simply replace me with her at the ceremony as well.
I pushed open the door and walked out, taking only the bouquet of white moonbells with me.
After climbing into my carriage, I placed the flowers beside me and sat there in silence for a long moment.
When Fredrik had asked me to become his mate, he had given me white moonbells. When I confessed my feelings and we became a couple, I had given him the same flowers in return. To me, white moonbells had always carried a special meaning.
They truly did.
But looking at them now, I wondered if they had ever meant the same to Fredrik.
When I returned home and illuminated the moonstones inside the manor, the first thing I saw was the ceremonial portrait that I had never gotten around to hanging on the wall.
In the portrait, I stood between them, Fredrik on my left and Glyneth on my right. Her arm was linked through mine, her smile bright and carefree, while Fredrik rested a hand on my shoulder.
But his eyes were not on me. They were fixed on Glyneth.
I remembered how Glyneth had insisted on taking a best friend portrait with me before the Moonbond ceremony, only to end up arguing with Fredrik. In the end, we had taken the portrait together, the three of us standing side by side.
Looking at it now, I wondered how I had failed to see that something was wrong.
Maybe I had seen it.
Maybe I had simply refused to admit it.
Or perhaps I had been too afraid to believe what was right in front of me.
My communication crystal suddenly lit up. Fredrik's name appeared.
I answered.
But it was Glyneth's voice that greeted me.
"Hello? Rietta? Why did you leave so early? We've been searching everywhere for you."
I leaned against the couch.
"I wasn't feeling well, so I came home."
Fredrik's voice followed casually.
"I told you. She's fine. She's probably exhausted from handling pack business again."
Then Glyneth spoke once more, "Then get some rest. Alpha Fredrik is taking me home first. I helped with your ceremony all day, and my back is aching."
Fredrik interrupted with a laugh.
"I'll take you home and give you a massage too. I just learned a new healing technique from the Moon Healers."
The familiar sound of them laughing and roughhousing drifted through the crystal.
Then the connection ended.
The soft humming tone lingered in my ears for a long time before I finally lowered the crystal.
That night, I could not sleep at all. I opened my crystal feed, and the first thing I saw was Glyneth's newest post.
The first image showed her and Fredrik together, each holding a bottle of moonwine.
The second image showed a woman's hand beneath a man's. My Moonbond ring sat on that woman's finger.
The caption contained only two words: Fits perfectly.
I stared at the image for a long time.
Fredrik hated moonwine.
In the past, even a single sip of ale would make him sick.
But when Glyneth suffered her first heartbreak, he spent the entire night drinking moonwine with her until his stomach bled and he ended up in the Healing Hall.
The funny thing was that I was supposed to be Glyneth's closest friend. Yet I learned about her heartbreak from someone else.
I only discovered that my mate had spent the entire night drinking with her after receiving a message from the Healing Hall.
From that day onward, whenever Glyneth invited Fredrik to the tavern for moonwine, he never refused.
I pressed the crystal mark beneath her message, leaving a small sign that I had seen it. When I refreshed the crystal feed, the post had already vanished.
A moment later, a message from Fredrik appeared.
[You’re still awake this late?]
I stared at the words but did not answer. A faint sting gathered behind my eyes, but strangely, my heart remained calm.
Perhaps I had already cried enough.
Perhaps there was simply nothing left inside me that could hurt.
I activated another communication crystal and contacted a different person.
"Professor, some time ago you asked whether I wanted to travel to Celestdawn Crest and join your teaching project. Is there still a place available?"
A relieved laugh came from the other side.
"There is. I've been keeping one open for you. If you come, everything will be ready within a few days."
After ending the call, I contacted the Moonbond Overseer.
"Sorry for reaching out so late. It's just that I'd like to change the name of the bride for the ceremony."
"Change it to Glyneth Ravenhurst."

(Rietta’s POV)
"Are you sure, Lady Wildmoor? Changing the bride's name at this stage..." The Moonbond Overseer sounded stunned. "I have arranged sacred mate ceremonies across many pack territories for years, and this has never happened before."
"Sure. Completely."
My answer came without the slightest hesitation.
"Everything else remains unchanged. The same ceremony date, the same sacred grounds, the same arrangements. Only change the bride's name to Glyneth Ravenhurst."
Silence filled the communication crystal for a few seconds before she finally agreed.
After a brief pause, I gave one final instruction.
"Do not tell either of them until the day of the Moonbond ceremony."
The following morning, I went to the Moonclaw Alliance Hall and submitted my resignation.
I had barely stepped outside the building when the communication crystal in my pocket vibrated.
A message from Fredrik appeared.
[I'm downstairs.]
I stared at the message for a long moment before finally getting up and heading downstairs.
When I reached the entrance, Fredrik immediately came toward me and held out a small paper bag. The faint scent of moonwine still clung to his cloak from the night before, and the smell made my stomach twist.
I did not reach for the bag. I already knew what was inside.
Ginger tea, a sealed packet of pain relief herbs, and two warming rune patches.
Every moon, on this exact day, the same things appeared without fail, whether rain covered the territory or snow buried the paths.
But I already knew the truth.
None of them had ever been meant for me.
As expected, Fredrik spoke first.
"Glyneth drank too much moonwine last night, and her cycle should start today. She's probably feeling awful. Could you bring this to her for me? You sit near each other anyway. It saves me the trip."
I remained silent.
Fredrik then pulled a half empty packet of pain-relief herbs from his pocket.
"Your cycle should be coming soon too. I left your medicine in my carriage, so I brought it while I was here."
He casually handed it toward me.
"Go on. Glyneth's waiting upstairs."
My gaze moved between the heavy paper bag and the nearly empty packet of herbs.
The whole situation felt ridiculous.
That packet was something I had purchased for myself the previous month after cramps became so painful I could barely stand.
At the time, Glyneth had been comfortably sipping the hot drink Fredrik prepared for her while enjoying a special massage technique he had learned specifically to ease her pain.
As for me, his future mate, curled up from agony and barely conscious, the only thing he said was: "Drink more hot water."
Why had I never felt truly wronged before?
Maybe it was not because I felt nothing. Perhaps I had simply grown used to breaking every hurt into smaller pieces, swallowing them one by one until there was nothing left to say.
But this time, I did not want to swallow it anymore.
I stepped back and looked at him with a coldness I could no longer hide.
"From now on, if you want to give something to Glyneth, contact her yourself. I have work to do, so I'm going back upstairs."
Fredrik froze, clearly surprised by the sudden chill in my attitude.
By the time he understood what had happened, I had already turned away and climbed the stairs without looking back.
When I returned to the pack hall, the Pack Attendant had already delivered the paper bag upstairs.
Glyneth was sitting at her desk opening it while several packmates gathered around her with excited smiles.
"Wow, another gift from your future mate? That's so thoughtful."
"Every moon without fail. Glyneth, you're so lucky."
The tips of Glyneth's ears turned red as she waved her hands frantically.
"No, no, it's not from a future mate."
As she spoke, she glanced toward me.
When I did not react, she raised her voice slightly.
"He's just... a really good friend."
I did not look up. My attention remained fixed on the transition documents displayed on my crystal screen.
But Glyneth leaned closer.
"Rietta, want to go to a tavern after work tonight?"
"In a few days, you won't be single anymore. We should celebrate before your Moonbond ceremony."
I frowned, preparing to refuse, but before I could speak, Glyneth clapped her hands together.
"My treat tonight. It's a pre-Moonbond party for our future Luna. Anyone who wants to join can come."
The entire pack hall immediately came alive.
Seven or eight packmates raised their hands at once.
Clearly, I no longer had room to refuse.
After the group was settled, Glyneth leaned closer again, lowering her voice.
"Rietta, could you add my name to the new alliance project?"
She smiled sweetly.
"I mean, I'm organizing your celebration and everything. I only need one more project to qualify for promotion. You're my best friend, so you'll help me, right?"
My fingers paused above the keyboard.
She always did this.
Since a long time, she would disappear whenever a project entered its most difficult stages. Then, right before completion, she would appear and ask me to add her name.
Every previous time, I had agreed.
She contributed nothing, but still became a permanent member of the alliance and received promotion after promotion.
But this time, I did not feel like helping.
I narrowed my eyes and looked at her expressionlessly.
"There's only one open position left in the project. Are you sure you want it?"
Glyneth laughed without concern.
"Of course. You're the best."
I nodded.
Then I typed Glyneth's name directly beneath the position of Deputy Project Steward.
Glyneth never bothered to check which position I selected. She had already turned away to continue chatting with our packmates.
Well, she had agreed to it herself. None of this would be my responsibility.
Once I left, the final project presentation would belong to the Deputy Project Steward.
I simply wondered how someone who had never spent a single day working on the project was going to stand before the Alpha Council and explain its results.
第3章
(Rietta’s POV)
After work, several packmates joined Glyneth in practically dragging me into a carriage bound for a tavern.
I had not even been seated for five minutes before Fredrik arrived.
He moved through the crowd without hesitation and headed straight toward Glyneth. His brows were tightly furrowed as he picked up the moonfruit cocktail sitting in front of her.
"Have you lost your mind? Do you even remember what time of the moon this is for you? And you're drinking moonwine?"
Glyneth immediately reached for the glass.
"Stay out of it, Alpha. Give it back."
"Absolutely not."
Fredrik lifted the drink higher, keeping it out of her reach, before calling toward a nearby server.
"Bring her a cup of warm moonmilk."
With one hand holding the glass away from her and the other pressing her gently back into her seat, he spoke in a sharp scolding tone. But the concern in his eyes was impossible to hide.
"If you're curled up in pain tomorrow because of your cramps, don't come crying to me."
The packmates around us exchanged meaningful glances.
One of the women leaned toward the person beside her and whispered softly.
"Wait, is Alpha Fredrik Glyneth's future mate?”
"No way. Our future Luna is Rietta, right?"
The entire table fell silent.
Several pairs of eyes immediately shifted between Fredrik and me.
I lowered my gaze to the glass of lemon water in my hands and suddenly realized how familiar this scene was.
Over the winters, at countless gatherings across various pack territories, Fredrik had peeled river shrimp for Glyneth, filled her bowl with soup, and taken care of her in ways that naturally made others assume they were a bonded couple.
At first, they always corrected the misunderstanding.
But after hearing it enough times, they eventually stopped explaining.
Fredrik's only response had always been the same.
"If other people misunderstand, that's their problem. As long as you know what we are to each other, nothing else matters."
Only then did Fredrik finally notice me.
A frown appeared on his face, and there was clear reproach in his voice.
"Rietta, why didn't you stop her? You know perfectly well she shouldn't be drinking during these few days, but you just let her do whatever she wants?"
The unfair accusation ignited a wave of anger inside me.
Before I could respond, Glyneth spoke first.
"Alpha, why are you blaming her? I was the one who insisted on coming."
She glared at him.
"Rietta is about to become your Luna. What kind of attitude is that?"
Fredrik paused. A trace of discomfort and guilt crossed his face.
With a sigh, he reached out and tried to place an arm around my shoulders.
"Rietta, that's not what I meant. I just panic when I'm worried about someone. Don't take it personally."
I quietly shifted away.
His hand landed on empty air.
"Sit down," I said calmly. "You're already here."
Fredrik sat beside me, but his eyes naturally drifted back toward Glyneth. The way he looked at her was open and unguarded.
My presence felt less like a future mate and more like a barrier standing between them. A barrier separating two people who truly belonged together.
Halfway through the gathering, one of the tavern servers approached Fredrik and Glyneth with a bright smile.
"Alpha, since you two are mates, we’re holding a special event this week. The couple who shares the longest kiss tonight wins a custom pair of enchanted moonstone rings. Would you like to participate?"
Fredrik looked ready to refuse at first, but the hopeful light in Glyneth's eyes made him hesitate.
After a long moment, he stood anyway and took her hand, leading her toward the center of the tavern.
Beneath the glow of the moonlight crystals overhead, all eyes turned to them as Glyneth rose onto her toes and pressed her lips to his.
Fredrik stiffened for a brief second before slowly closing his eyes and kissing her back.
I remained seated in the booth, quietly watching as whispers spread through the crowd and curious stares landed on me from every direction.
But unlike before, I felt nothing. No embarrassment, no heartbreak, not even pain.
Perhaps my heart had been wounded too many times, and the place that once hurt had already gone numb.
A moment later, applause broke out across the tavern.
They had won.
The server smiled warmly and handed over a small box containing the pair of enchanted rings.
Glyneth finally pulled away from Fredrik, her cheeks slightly red, before hurrying back toward me.
"Rietta!"
She opened the box, removed the male ring, and placed it in my hand.
"This one is for you. You're not upset, are you? I just really wanted the rings. It didn't mean anything else."
I lowered my gaze to the ring resting in my palm and quickly realized the silver band was far too large. It would never fit my finger.
With a calm expression, I held it out and returned it.
"It's too big, Glyneth. I can't wear it. Give it to someone it actually fits."
Glyneth immediately turned toward Fredrik. Without the slightest hesitation, she tossed the ring in his direction.
"Your lucky day."
Fredrik caught it with ease. A quiet laugh slipped from him before he casually returned to his seat beside me.
"My future Luna has always been easygoing and understanding. She'd never make a fuss over something this small."
He glanced at Glyneth playfully.
"Unlike you. You're always causing trouble every other day."
The scent of Fredrik's cologne drifted toward me.
Instead of warmth, it only made my stomach turn.
But I truly did not care anymore.
After all, a friendship that had lasted twenty winters and a love that had survived ten winters apart had finally reached its end tonight.
Completely and forever.

(Rietta’s POV)
The gathering ended not long afterward. Fredrik went to the carriage grounds to retrieve the carriage, leaving Glyneth and me waiting outside the tavern entrance.
We had only just stepped outside when Glyneth suddenly patted her pockets and frowned.
"My communication crystal is missing. Rietta, could you go back and help me look for it? I'll search around here. Maybe it fell somewhere on the way out."
I nodded and turned back toward the private chamber.
I searched every corner of the chamber and checked every table, but there was no sign of Glyneth's communication crystal. Eventually, I returned to the tavern entrance.
The moment I arrived, I found complete chaos.
Fredrik had another werewolf by the collar. Two tavern attendants were struggling to hold him back, each gripping one of his arms.
Blood stained the corner of the stranger's mouth. He spat onto the ground, cursed under his breath, and stormed away.
Behind Fredrik, Glyneth stood trembling with tears streaming down her face. Her eyes were swollen from crying.
The instant Fredrik noticed me, he shrugged off the attendants, strode toward me, and grabbed my wrist.
"Rietta, did you leave her alone on purpose? Do you realize how dangerous that was? If I hadn't heard the commotion and rushed over, she could have..."
I frowned.
The accusation came so suddenly and without reason that all the frustration I had buried throughout the night surged to the surface.
"She told me she left her communication crystal in the private chamber, so I went back to help her find it. What does that have to do with me?"
Fredrik's expression darkened immediately.
"Glyneth has been holding her communication crystal the entire night. When did she ever leave it behind?"
His eyes narrowed.
"Rietta, if you're going to make up a story, at least choose a believable one."
For a moment, I stood frozen.
Then everything suddenly became clear.
Glyneth slowly rose to her feet and grabbed Fredrik's arm.
"Why are you yelling at her? Who gave you permission to yell at her?"
Then she turned toward me with tears still shining in her eyes.
"Rietta didn't mean it. I'm sure of it. It's my fault for not staying close to her. That's why I ended up alone."
I stared at her, a dull ache spreading through my chest.
Twenty winters...
We had known each other for twenty winters, but now she was using such a cheap trick against me.
All those years of friendship, every memory we had shared, suddenly felt meaningless, as if twenty winters could be thrown away without a second thought.
Twenty winters of friendship, and it was worth nothing.
A bitter laugh escaped my lips as I looked coldly at both of them.
"I already explained it. She asked me to look for her communication crystal. Believe me or don't."
I shrugged lightly.
"I don't care anymore."
Fredrik frowned deeply.
"Rietta, you've disappointed me."
"If you're upset about what happened earlier tonight, there is no reason to take it out on Glyneth. And she still calls you her best friend."
With those words, he wrapped an arm around Glyneth and guided her toward the carriage.
I remained where I was.
As I watched the carriage disappear into the distance, the pain I had been suppressing finally surfaced.
My eyes burned.
I drew a deep breath and forced the tears back.
Crying over those two was not worth it.
第5章
(Rietta’s POV)
Fredrik stayed beside Glyneth in the Healing Hall for three full days, and during all that time, he never contacted me once. There were no messages through the communication crystal, no calls, and no attempt to ask where I was or how I was doing.
Strangely, I welcomed the silence.
For the first time in a long while, I did not have to wonder what Fredrik was thinking or worry about where his attention had gone.
During the day, I packed my belongings from the manor. At night, I completed the final procedures for my resignation from the Moonclaw Alliance.
Three days was more than enough time to erase every trace of myself from that place.
The day Glyneth finally left the Healing Hall, Fredrik returned home alone.
He stepped inside just as I was fastening the final buckle on my last travel case, and his eyes immediately moved from me to the luggage resting beside my feet.
For some reason, seeing me standing there with everything packed made something tighten painfully in his chest.
"Rietta, where are you going?"
My expression remained calm.
"There are too many old things here. I'm clearing them out."
Fredrik nodded without questioning further.
"Good timing, then."
He loosened the collar of his shirt before continuing, "Glyneth has been frightened since that night. It's not safe for her to stay alone. Let her move into the manor for a while."
His voice remained completely natural.
"You can move out first. Seeing you still reminds her of that night."
He spoke as though asking his future Luna to leave their home so her best friend could move in was the most ordinary thing in the world.
"Fine."
I agreed immediately.
Honestly, having a few quiet days to myself before leaving felt like a relief.
Fredrik froze for a moment, clearly surprised that I had accepted so easily. Countless thoughts seemed to pass through his mind, but in the end, he only said, “The Moonbond ceremony is in three days.”
His voice softened slightly before he added, “I’ll come pick you up when the time arrives.”
I said nothing.
Without another word, I dragged my travel case out of the manor.
For the next three days, the two of them lived comfortably in what was supposed to become my marital home.
At least, that was what Glyneth's crystal feed suggested.
From every post she shared, it was obvious how much Fredrik cared about her.
Whenever nightmares woke her in the middle of the night, Fredrik stayed beside her until she fell asleep again.
When she suddenly craved cakes from a bakery located several territories away, he left in the middle of the night and rode there himself to buy them.
None of those things were actions Fredrik had ever done for me. Not even during the time when we were deeply in love.
On the final day, Glyneth posted another update.
There was no picture attached this time. Only a single sentence.
[These peaceful days are about to end. It's a little sad.]
Beneath it was Fredrik's reply.
[Whenever you want to stay here, just come.]
[There will always be a place for you in Rietta's and my manor.]
As I read those words, I felt nothing but relief. I was relieved that I had chosen to end both of these twisted relationships before the Moonbond ceremony.
At least I would never have to become the unwanted third person in my own mate bond, standing between two people who truly wanted each other.
Three days later, the day of the Moonbond ceremony finally arrived.
A message from Fredrik appeared on my communication crystal.
[I've already brought Glyneth to the sacred grounds. By the way, she wants to walk into the ceremony with you and personally hand you over to me. I think it's a wonderful idea. Consider it an extra part of the ceremony.]
A second message followed.
[Come a little later. The stylists and moonweavers are preparing Glyneth right now.]
I never replied.
Fredrik could no longer see how ridiculous and inappropriate that request truly was.
This ceremony did not need two brides.
And since Glyneth was already there, there was no reason for me to attend.
I blocked Fredrik's communication crystal and boarded a carriage bound for the Skyfang Port. From there, I would leave for the distant Celestdawn Crest.
Just before boarding the skyship, I contacted the Moonbond Overseer one final time.
"I won't be attending the ceremony today."
I paused briefly.
"But I have already sent a wedding gift. Please make sure it reaches them."
A faint smile touched my lips.
"Please wish them a long and happy life together on my behalf."
