"At the graduation ceremony, everyone waits for Silas, the White Tiger Alpha, to seal the bond with me. Instead, he walks past me and kneels before the pure Saintess. Eighteen years of promises—gone. Then the weakest snake shifter in the Academy, the one everyone threw away, steps forward. Cold forehead pressed into my palm, red slit pupils full of fear. ""No one wants me. You don't have a Guardian either. Can we… try?"" I say yes. When the Dark Surge swallows the royal city, Silas crawls at my feet, begging me to save his shattered beast core. But high above the city walls, my useless little snake evolves into the noble Dark Dragon—and only wants me."

At the graduation ceremony, everyone is waiting for Silas, the White Tiger shifter, to seal the bond with me. We grew up side by side for eighteen years. He promised me a thousand times that he would be my Guardian for life. But the moment I reach out my hand, he walks right past me and drops to one knee in front of Seraphina. "The Dark Surge is coming. She has a purification gift. She is a better match for me than you." Just as the Head Mentor announces that I've failed to graduate, a serpent shifter in the far corner—one no human chose—slowly rises to his feet. He walks straight to me, kneels on one knee, and presses his cold forehead into my palm. "No one wants me." "You don't have a Guardian either." "Can we… try?" Later, the Dark Surge swallows the royal city whole. Silas's beast core shatters, and he crawls on his knees begging me to save him. While the black serpent—the one everyone once threw away—evolves into a noble Dark Dragon amid the sky full of dark mist, becoming the ruler of this world. --- Guardian Academy holds its graduation ceremony once a year. Humans stand on the left side of the high platform. Shifters stand on the right. When their name is called, each shifter must walk—under the eyes of the entire hall—toward the human they've chosen to protect for life. Once the bond is sealed, betrayal is punishable by death. The Head Mentor calls the first name. "White Tiger shifter—Silas." The hall breaks into whispers. Every eye lands on me. The girl next to me nudges my arm, grinning. "Elara, hold out your hand already." "Everyone knows you two are already promised. He would never pick anyone else!" My palm is damp with nervous sweat. Silas and I were born the same year. Our family estates were separated by a single wall. The first time he shifted, his cub paws got stuck in the fence, and I was the one who ran crying for help. The first time he fell into a frenzy, I was the one who held him and calmed him again and again with my gift. Back then, his fluffy head rested on my lap, and he mumbled into my knee: "Elara, when we graduate, I'll seal the bond with you." "Anyone who hurts you, I'll rip their throat out." He said it so many times. I believed him for years. Silas steps forward from the line of shifters. He is tall, his white hair falling across his forehead, his golden eyes glowing under the ceremony lights. He is top of the combat class. The shifter with the best shot at joining the Royal Guard. Every step he takes draws gasps from the crowd. When he gets close, I finally lift my hand. But he doesn't stop. His sleeve brushes past my fingertips. A soft, cold breeze trails behind him. I stand there, frozen. Silas keeps walking. He stops in front of Seraphina. The hall goes silent for a heartbeat. Then explodes into louder whispers than before. Seraphina looks shocked. "Silas?" Silas drops to one knee and holds out his hand. "Seraphina. I want to be your Guardian." My hand is still frozen in midair. The girl next to me sucks in a sharp breath. The Head Mentor frowns. "Silas. The name on your registered bond is Elara." "Reselection is allowed at the ceremony, but are you absolutely sure?" Silas's voice is steady. "I'm sure."

Without thinking, I ask, "Then what about me?" Silas finally looks at me. "The Oracle foretold the Dark Surge will reach the royal city within a year." "Seraphina has an S-rank purification gift. Only she can stand beside me in that fight." He pauses. "Ellie. Your gift only calms emotions." "When the Surge hits, calming won't save a single soul." The whispers swell around me. "Seraphina's bloodline isn't as noble as Elara's, but she's the only S-rank purifier in the city." "Elara's gift was always useless anyway." "Silas chose Seraphina for the royal city. He did the right thing." Seraphina looks at me, guilty. "Elara, I'm sorry. I had no idea." But she still slides her hand into Silas's palm. Golden bond marks light up between them. Applause thunders through the hall. I clutch the small box hidden in my sleeve. Inside is a bond clasp shaped like a white tiger—my graduation gift for Silas. I don't need it anymore. The Head Mentor walks up to me. "Elara. You may choose again from any unbonded shifter." I look at the ones who are left. Almost every shifter avoids my eyes. No one wants a D-rank human Silas just threw away. The Head Mentor sighs. "If no one bonds with you today, you'll be held back a year." Silas frowns. "Ellie, just go home." "Next year, my family will find you a suitable low-tier shifter." He looks at me with pity. As if abandoning me on the spot and still being generous enough to arrange my future is some enormous kindness. Then, from the back of the hall, a chair scrapes across the floor. A black-haired serpent shifter stands up. He comes from the Feral Orphanage. No family. No partner. For three years, he has been the most invisible shifter in the Academy. Under every gaze in the hall, he walks up to me, kneels on one knee, and presses his cold forehead into my palm. The Head Mentor blinks. "Number Seven. What are you doing?" He doesn't answer. He just lifts his eyes to mine. "No one wants me." "You don't have a Guardian either." "Can we… try?" I look down at him. "You know my gift is only D-rank?" "I know." "I can't purify dark energy. I can't make you stronger in a fight." He says it seriously. "It doesn't matter." I crouch down until we're eye to eye. "If we bond, will you be loyal to me? Forever?" "I will." "No matter how powerful a human you meet later, you won't leave me?" He shakes his head. "Never." "As long as you don't send me away, I will never leave you." "And if I'm in danger? Will you protect me?" Not a moment of hesitation. "I'll die before you do." Something inside me stalls. So this is what it feels like—to be chosen without hesitation. Better than chasing someone who weighs and measures me, is choosing the one who walks straight to me. I close my hand around his. "From today on, you're not Number Seven anymore." "Your name is Kaelen." "From now on, you are my only bonded mate." His eyes flood red. "Okay." Silver bond marks bloom from our joined palms. Then, from behind me, comes Silas's sigh. "Elara. You're still so childish."

Silas walks up to me, frowning the same way he used to when I got in trouble as a kid. He grabs my arm. "Alright. I know you're mad at me." "But a bond is for life. It's not a toy to use when you're throwing a tantrum." He looks at Kaelen, contempt written all over his face. "He comes from the Feral Orphanage. His bloodline is filth. He hasn't passed a single combat evaluation in three years." "What is he going to protect you with?" Kaelen's body stiffens for a heartbeat. The next moment, a cold black serpent's tail slips quietly around my ankle. I pause. Because of my mind gift, I can feel the emotions of anyone near me. This little snake is something else. Under the pressure of the strongest shifter in the room, he doesn't flinch. He stands perfectly straight. Which means he isn't afraid of Silas at all. But the tail around my ankle tells me the truth. He is scared. Scared I'll give him up. I can't help it—I smile. I look up at Silas. "I'm not throwing a tantrum." "I'm an adult." "I know what I'm doing." Silas's frown deepens. "Ellie! You've been spoiled at home your whole life. You have no idea how dangerous the world is." "The Dark Surge is coming. Your bonded mate decides whether you live or die." "Once you calm down, you'll see my choice was the right one." He has always been like this. Deciding who I can be friends with, deciding what's dangerous for me, even deciding what my life should look like. I used to listen to Silas because I trusted him. Not because I had no mind of my own. I shake his hand off, hard. "I get to decide if he is right for me." The tail around my ankle gives an excited little quiver. It tickles. I hook my pinky around Kaelen's. "Stop it." Silas's face darkens. He steps forward to grab me again. But Kaelen moves first. His expression snaps into something else entirely, blocking me from Silas. His blood-red slit pupils glare at the White Tiger. "Don't touch her." Silas's fur bristles down his arms. "You've got a death wish." Before they can tear into each other, Seraphina steps between them. "Silas. Let it go." She turns to me. "Elara. I hope you don't come to regret this." Silas opens his mouth to say more, but the mentors keeping order finally pull him back. I lead Kaelen up to the Head Mentor. "Please register us." Silver bond marks flow into the spellbook. A cold voice rings out from the spellbook. "Human, Elara. Serpent shifter, Kaelen. Bond confirmed." "Cleared for graduation." Kaelen stares at the spellbook, dazed. He doesn't move until the mentor prompts him. Then he follows me out. We walk down an empty hallway. He suddenly stops. The tail around my ankle slides away, fast. "I'm sorry." He drops his head, like he has done something wrong. "I was just scared you'd give me up. I didn't mean to hold on to you like that." I look at his pale, beautiful face. "Relax. I chose you. I won't just throw you away." Kaelen lifts his eyes. The unease in those red slit pupils slowly fades. He bends down and looks up at me like he has nowhere else in the world to go. "Then… My mate." "The dorms close tonight." His cool, smooth tail traces along my wrist, moving in a slow, teasing stroke. "I have nowhere to go." "Can you take me home?" $#{ 4| Take Me Home}$# For some reason, my heart beats a little faster. "O—okay." I turn away in a hurry, and miss the dangerous little smile at the corner of Kaelen's mouth. After I started at the Academy, my parents bought me a small house nearby. Kaelen follows me home. The moment we step inside, he follows me like a shadow. I pull out a fresh set of sheets. "The guest room is next door. You'll sleep there tonight." Kaelen doesn't take them. His eyes drop, and his tail winds slowly up my calf. "Snakes have low body temperature." "Sleeping alone… it gets cold." I raise a brow. Snakes are cold-blooded. Since when do they get cold? I look at him. Kaelen is pale and pretty, black hair falling loose around his neck, his slit pupils wide and shiny as he looks up at me. He is a snake, but he is better at puppy eyes than any puppy. "Then how did you sleep in the Academy dorms before?" "I just dealt with it." He leans down, his cool breath brushing my ear. "But now I have a mate." "Do I still have to just deal with it?" The tail slides higher. My ears burn. I push his forehead back. "Cut it out." Kaelen blinks, all innocence, and flips it back on me: "Elara, you're being mean to me." The tail winds tighter. I never would have guessed the quietest snake in the Academy is this shameless behind closed doors. If he stays any longer, I might lose control. I shove him into the guest room, fast. In the middle of the night, I jolt awake. A strong wave of fear comes through the bond. I run into the guest room and find Kaelen curled up on the bed, black hair soaked with cold sweat, mumbling over and over: "Don't hit me…" "I'll be good." "Don't send me away…" My chest aches. I take his hand and pour my calming gift into him. The next instant, I fall into a pitch-black lake. At the bottom coils a massive shadow I can't fully make out. Its power is cold and vast, roaring beneath the surface. Before I can get closer, the shadow shifts. His whole inner world shakes. My eyes snap open. Kaelen is awake too. Instinctively, he yanks me into his arms, his tail locking tight around my waist. "Elara, don't go." His voice is still shaking. I pat his back gently. "I'm not going." "I won't leave you." Kaelen buries his face in the crook of my neck. His cold lips brush my skin, barely there. "Then stay with me tonight." "Just one night." Feeling the fear still trembling inside him, I stay. When I wake up the next morning, I'm wrapped up tight in his arms. Right then, the doorbell rings. I open the door. Silas is standing outside. His eyes slide past me and land on Kaelen, whose shirt is hanging loose around his collar. The tail is still curled around my waist. Silas's face darkens. "You two slept together last night?" Before I can answer, Kaelen hugs me from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder. "Elara felt sorry for me. She didn't want me to be cold." A vein jumps at Silas's temple. He shoves an Academy notice into my hand. "To prepare for the Dark Surge, every graduate has to complete a full year of combat training." Then he turns his cold gaze on Kaelen. "Accidents happen on the training grounds." "If one of a bonded pair dies, the bond breaks." Silas looks back at me, dead certain. "Ellie, I'll set you free." I push Kaelen behind me. My voice goes flat. "Silas." "Lay one finger on him. I dare you."

Silas freezes. Growing up, I fought with him. I threw tantrums at him. But I have never once said his name that cold. His throat bobs. "Elara. Do eighteen years with me really mean less than one night with him?" Kaelen peeks over my shoulder, his eyes tilting up at the corners. "Elara, I didn't know I was that good." His tone is innocently surprised, but the smugness in his eyes is impossible to miss. I can't help laughing. I reach up and ruffle his black hair. "You are." "You really are that good." Silas's face gets uglier by the second. He clenches his fists. "Elara, this time you've gone too far." "Fine, choosing Seraphina at the ceremony made you lose face. That was on me. I didn't think it through." "But I did it to fight the Dark Surge. I did it for the whole royal city." He takes a deep breath. His tone turns arrogant again. "I can let you throw your little fit for a couple of days." "But if you keep treating me like this, don't expect me to forgive you so easily." So even now, he still thinks I'm just throwing a fit. I say calmly, "I don't care." Silas stiffens. "You're not my bonded mate." "I don't need your approval. And I don't care if you forgive me or not." Something flickers behind Silas's eyes, disbelief. The next second, he actually lifts his foot to step inside. The smile drops off Kaelen's face. He lets go of me and blocks the door. "Elara didn't invite you in." "Get out." Silas laughs like he's heard a joke. "You think you can stop me?" "I could snap your neck right here. Wanna find out?" Kaelen doesn't back down. "I believe you." "But unless I'm dead," "You don't get to touch her." Silas stares at him for a long moment, then lets out a cold laugh. "Fine." "Accidents happen on the training grounds. I'll have plenty of chances to put you in the ground." "Just wait." The door slams shut. The second Silas's footsteps fade, the fierce, brave serpent shifter turns around and leans all over me. "Elara." He rests his chin on my shoulder, voice soft and wounded. "He's going to kill me." "I'm so scared." I poke his forehead. "You didn't look that scared a minute ago." Kaelen buries his face in the crook of my neck. "That was all an act. I was terrified." I know he is just acting pitiful, but I still pat his back. "Okay, okay. Don't be scared." "I won't let him hurt you." That afternoon, the Academy training grounds. Every graduate is already there. The Head Mentor stands on the high platform, voice grave. "First trial today, dark mist resistance." Black mist rises slowly from the center of the ring. The first pair up is Silas and Seraphina. Seraphina stands behind Silas, her palm glowing with pure white light. The moment the mist touches them, it melts away like snow on flame. Gasps ripple through the crowd. "That's an S-rank purification gift for you." "With Seraphina here, the Dark Surge isn't even a threat." Seraphina lowers her hand. Her face is a little pale, but her back stays straight. I can feel it, she loves being looked at like this. She does deserve the praise. Silas walks out of the mist and looks at me. His expression is certain, like he's waiting for me to regret it. I don't even look at him. I just tighten the wrist guard on Kaelen's arm. "If anything feels wrong in there, you tell me immediately." Kaelen looks down at my hands. "Okay."
