She hit the gas and drove off, leaving me standing in the middle of a frozen mountain road during the first blizzard of November. It was fourteen degrees. Four hours. That was how long it took for the cold to seep through my coat, through my skin, until my limbs were entirely numb. I called her twenty times. I sent fifty messages begging for help. Every single one was swallowed by the silence. By the fifty-first message, my knuckles were swollen and stiff, barely able to tap the screen. The chill had crept into my chest, heavy and suffocating.
