You can't even take a simple photo of yourself?" He let out an irritated sigh. "Just because we're dating doesn't mean you need to depend on me for every little thing." The next morning, a heavy package from a specialty printing press was delivered to my desk by mistake. Inside wasn't a set of corporate proofs. It was a three-hundred-page hardcover photo book. Printed across the linen cover in elegant silver embossing were the words: "A Thousand Days of Lauren." On page one was a snapshot of Lauren the day she first cut her hair short into a pixie bob. On page ninety-seven was her sleeping profile, flushed and delicate under a soft throw blanket when she had a fever. On the very last page was a shot taken just last night—her turning back beneath the glow of a streetlamp, smiling over her shoulder. Beneath that final frame, Elton had written in his distinct, fluid handwriting: "She has no idea that capturing her life is my favorite thing in the world."
