My wife skipped our three-year-old son’s retinal detachment surgery so she could hold her former flame’s hand during a routine outpatient follow-up. That evening, while packing our son’s diaper bag in the quiet of the pediatric ward, I picked up his voice-recording teddy bear and pressed the stitched paw. Out came a tiny, raspy whisper. “Teddy… Mommy isn’t here anymore. Can you be my mommy instead?” At his community follow-up clinic a week later, the pediatrician casually asked why his mother hadn’t come. Toby reached up with his small, trembling fingers, lightly touching the gauze over his right eye. “Dr. Sarah, my mommy turned into an angel and flew far, far away,” he said in his small, innocent voice. “To a place called Mr. Derek’s house.” During his preschool’s Family Day presentation, Toby stood on the little stage holding up a construction-paper drawing of just the two of us. “My teacher told us that only people who die can’t take family photos,” he announced to the room. “So my mommy became a star in the sky.”
